    Monday Map Madness!

    Decatur Metro | January 13, 2014

It’s Monday.  Grab your cup o’ joe and learn a little something extra about your neighborhood and city this morning.

Check out this great map overlay by Jack Kittle of 1927-1930 topographic maps of the Atlanta area laid on top of a current “Open Streets” map of the city. In addition to being a very good look at Decatur’s topography, you can also easily make out the city’s existing roads and buildings during that three year period.

    Comment with your observations!

    h/t: Peter

Atlanta – Say or See Something

    Decatur Metro | August 2, 2012

I’m really unsure about whether I’ve ever posted this before, but this Flickr/Twitter map of Atlanta is still pretty cool. Tweets are in blue, Flickr posts are in orange and where both occur are white.  Note the distinct patterns for Hartsfield-Jackson airport, Stone Mountain, Piedmont Park and downtown Decatur.

These maps are courtesy of Eric Fischer, who posted a bunch of these maps for many of the worlds major cities on Flickr.

The North America map is pretty interesting as well.  Lots to say east of the Mississippi and lots more to see west of it.

Atlanta (and Decatur) Data Geeks Rejoice! More 2010 Census Maps!

    Decatur Metro | April 8, 2011

William writes in and introduces himself to his new neighbors.

I’m a data and GIS analyst (and former reporter) who just moved to the Medlock area after working for The Palm Beach Post down in South Florida for the past decade. I specialized in stuff like census and real estate data, so I thought I’d throw together some maps of my new home after seeing your post a couple of weeks ago about the NYT’s census map.

You may be wondering about the map above.  It’s straight off a new post on William’s blog showing the black Atlanta population from the 2010 census.  The darker the shading, the larger % of the group; the higher the bar, the more people from the group in the block.  Pretty interesting way to look at it.  Check out his post for similar maps showing the Atlanta Hispanic and Asian populations.

And for the more hyper-local among us, William also created an interactive, block-by-block Google Map of 2010 Census data for just DeKalb County.  Here’s a screen-shot of it, centered around Decatur.  If you want to play around with it, you’ll have to jump over to William’s blog and scroll down a bit.

The GREATEST Online Atlanta Demographic Maps EVER!

    Decatur Metro | October 7, 2010

The Emory Libraries Electronic Data Center has put a new interactive map entitled “Snapshot of Atlanta” on its website that lets you look at Atlanta at a neighborhood level based on a variety of demographic factors.  Anything from median age to median income to population change (2000-2009) to average household size.

Above is a snapshot of the median income map for Decatur, Avondale and Druid Hills.  Looks like Winnona Park and Northwest Decatur are still the wealthiest areas in the COD.

Personally, I found the median age, population change and household size maps particularly interesting.  Check it out!

Huge thanks to Clairmont Heights Civic Association for pointing this out.

    Atlanta Demographics Through Netflix

    Decatur Metro | January 11, 2010

TeeRuss points us to this fascinating interactive map on the New York Times website, showing Netflix rental patterns for 100 movies in a dozen U.S. cities.

Lucky for us, one of those metros is none other than the city where “every day is an opening day!”  Umm..yeah, Atlanta.

TeeRuss notes that Wall-E, the Tyler Perry movies, and Mad Men provide a revealing look at Atlanta.  I would add Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Milk, Religulous, and Slumdog to that list.  (I can’t link to the individual maps, so you gotta go find ‘em.)

Of the movies I just mentioned, can you guess which map is shown above?
