O’ Christmas Tree, O’ (Geez!) Christmas Tree
Decatur Metro | January 3, 2010Andisheh sends us a photo of this year’s post-Christmas Agnes Scott pine tree gathering.
But where he sees a place where “Christmas trees in Decatur go to die”, I see a lively Christmas tree pig pile. (Someone must have left a bottle of water in the parking lot.)
And speaking of dispensing of your tree, Cate writes in…
Please Decaturites, don’t leave your be-tinseled tree on the curb for the trash guys to pick up. All sorts of small animals love to chew on tinsel and can get seriously ill.
What happens to trees that are left at the curb (non-tinseled, of course)? Do they get chipped/recycled? I left my tree at the curb this year. The honest truth is that I didn’t want to deal with the needle mess in my trunk.
Tie it to your roof?
And scratch to heck and back the paint? No, can’t do that. And I didnt’ have anything immediately available to put on the roof to protect it. I keep telling my wife I need a pickup!
Mother Nature sure would appreciate it. Besides, who sees the roof of your car anyway?
So, do trees left on the side of the road get recycled or not? We have yard waste curbside pickup as well every week that i assume gets turned into mulch.
If curbside tree pickup gets the recycled mulch treatment, what’s the point of driving to Agnes Scott or Home Depot?
And there I thought I was looking at an actual giant Christmas tree that had fallen and been unable to get up.
Now that Agnes Scott recycling is over, is there any place we can take the trees locally for recycling? We’re leaving ours up through the Epiphany.

Per Public Works: through today, Decatur residents may drop off live trees at the Christmas Tree Recycling Center in the Agnes Scott parking lot. For those observing the full 12 days of Christmas, the trees can be taken beginning tomorrow to City of Decatur Public Works, 2635 Talley St.
The employee with whom I spoke was unaware of the Christmas season and thought it had concluded. She indicated that the current schedule was likely put in place for those that believe having a tree in the home after Jan 1 is bad luck (this is a concept with which I’m unfamiliar). She suggested that perhaps next year they will reconsider the deadline and allow people observing the proper season to deposit trees upon conclusion. I had presumed that the current schedule related to Agnes Scott’s need to use the parking lot beginning this week, but she confirmed that is not the case.
Wow. Great info. Thanks for relaying the message to Public Works and reporting back Carl!
Oops…forgot to also mention that the trees may still be left at the curb for those that receive City sanitation services (primarily single-family home dwellers).
Carl, on behalf of all liturgical Christians, thanks for your intervention and Happy Epiphany (a few days early).
The pile always makes me a little sad.
Our tree continues to suck water like a sponge and is as green as the day we got it. Feels wasteful to toss it out (especially in these shortest and coldest of days), so we’ll probably keep it though most of January, like we always do. Plus, my wife’s birthday is on the Epiphany, so we use it to celebrate that as well.
The idea of folding up Christmas before Twelfth Night/Epiphany/King’s Day is humorous to me. I imagine the three kings showing up and there being no indication left of what actually happened. So they’re just kind of wandering around asking, “Um…Have you perchance seen a baby around? He may or may not have been glowing. Also, farm animals.”
