Not clear in case of CSD. I’d like to know too. But my guess is one or more of the below:
        1. DOT has asked for folks to avoid commuting today; many teachers and staff live outside Decatur in areas with roads that are more affected
        2. Concerns about flooding of routes that buses take–some are residential streets, not main arteries
        3. Concern about kids walking or waiting for the bus outside in thunderstorms
        4. Maybe some school buildings have flooding or leaking. If they don’t, I want to know how to hire their maintenance folks after hours to come work on my house!

Schools are closed because it might snow
Schools are closed because of those strange green lights in the sky
Schools were lost in a craps game last night
Schools are closed because they’re out of pudding
Schools are closed because they are now federally protected wetlands
Schools are closed for an Esperanto spelling bee
Schools are closed because the Cowboys lost
Schools are closed because parents have been too productive at work lately
Schools are closed because someone, I’m not saying who Dr. Edwards, misplaced the keys
Schools are celebrating the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation by freeing the students
Schools are closed to give me something fun to do during an interminable conference call…

        Esperanto spelling bee…classic!

I thought they were closed because of the zombies being loosed from their graves with all the rain.

I’m pretty sure that the owners of Leapin Lizards bribed the school board to close. Seemed like at least half the school district was there today.

I know that Winnona Park flooded last week; I can only imagine how bad it was after this weekend. Not sure if they would close all the schools because one had flooding. Doesn’t seem possible that Glennwood or College Heights could have flooding, or even Renfroe I think. DHS–maybe? But I know for sure WP basement-level classes are probably flooded–that is all kindergarten plus the cafeteria. The yahoo groups have been quiet (as has this place!).

Recalling back from when I was in school (almost two years ago now), CSD will cancel if any of the following conditions are true:

        1. Lunch cannot be served
        2. Buses cannot be guaranteed (CSD relies on DeKalb county buses) (After Rosa Parks died, there was talk of canceling school since DeKalb was sending most(all?) of their students to her funeral)
        3. It’s not safe to travel to school due to inclement weather
        4. School facilities are not operating correctly*, **

        * This happened once when I was in third grade at Winnona Park. The heaters failed overnight in the middle of winter so they canceled school.

** But when I was at College Heights for Pre-K, the power was out after Hurricane Opal and we still had school.
