Atlanta / Decatur Flooding Updates
Decatur Metro | September 21, 2009Nelliebelle sent in this pic of the “new Oakhurst Creek.”
Use this post to report flooding around Decatur and Atlanta.
I’ve given over the right column to Twitter updates for the moment to keep folks updated on the latest flooding reports in the area.
Stay safe out there everyone and don’t drive through any pools of water too deep to see the bottom.
where in oakhurst is this?
Are you trying to claim jump on my rafting concession?
I am. Where is it Nellie? Oakview?
The corner of Underwood-Fayetteville feeding into Oakview.
And keep your d&!n hands off my rafts.
I don’t think it will be a surprise to anyone that tomorrow’s Clairemont Elementary Walk and Roll Day has been cancelled. (They would have had to rename it “Walk and Row” Day, tee hee).
Decatur Schools open two hours late tomorrow. Just saw it on the news.
CSD should really close tomorrow, just to be safe. The line of rain stretches back to Elvis’ birthplace. I doubt our schools will flood, but you never know. And what about the safety of the teachers and staffers??
Actually Winnona flooded last Thursday. Water was pouring up out of the drains of the bathrooms that are inside the Kindergarten rooms, apparently it was nasty.
The kids and teachers spent the day sharing space in two of the upstairs Kindergarten classrooms and everyone coped just fine but a long messy cleanup day for the maintenance staff. The cafeteria was also flooded.
Oh boy, the working parent scramble begins. Anyone know if buses will be running?
DeKalb County Schools are closed tomorrow. The creek flowing through the Druid Hills golf course is over its banks, and is close to flowing across North Decatur Road next to the Panera Bread Company. The apartment complex on the other side of the creek is flooded.
Holy crap. Canoe Restaurant under water. Photo here. h/t: Carl
Just got the automated call that City Schools of Decatur are closed. At least the bus issue is clear.
Time to go impose upon the kindness of friends so can go to work….
Slightly OT however I found this webpage earlier this year. It updates every midnight with new Lake Lanier water level totals. It is interesting to see what has been happening to the water levels in the lake as it has filled up over the last year, but now it is especially interesting to see the levels over the past 5 days.

Or check out the real-time updates here (that’s the last 60 days, updated every 15 minutes):

or the last couple of years with daily data:

There is serious flooding just south of the intersection at N. Decatur and Superior. The creek there has risen to the point where 2 or 3 of the nearby houses have been flooded.
I’m sure some of the houses that run along Willow there are also flooded.
A couple more real-time graphs that might be of interest:

Now (11 PM 9/21) it looks like all of these have crested–which is not to say they can’t rise again if the rain comes back…
I am just shocked at all this flooding. Did anyone see the video from Six Flags? Under water. And the pictures from the Chattahoochee flooding I-285? I’m very grateful that all I’ve had to worry about is some water in the basement and a mildewed deck.
In recent years, I’ve come to appreciate the advice to “count your blessings” more and more. It’s easy to feel annoyed about having to make last-minute child care arrangements when school is cancelled but then look at the picture of an overturned bus in a flooded Gwinnett County school bus lot or trees on homes. “Counting blessings” shouldn’t be used as an excuse as in “our school system is so much better than most in Georgia so no one should complain….” but it is a reminder that we cannot control everything and a little gratitude is often in order (as in “While I am not at all happy with some CSD decisions, I’m glad our Board and Admin is basically honest and competent unlike some in Geogia….”
Couldn’t agree more, Snowflake. We have a dry basement and no leaks, while many people I know are dealing with major issues caused by the rain. We are indeed fortunate. Now if I can just get the poor squirrel who was hiding from the rain and ended up in my wall…
WORD. I was grumbling a little about our leaky roof & water-stained family room ceiling, but when I watched the news, then went to the WSB & WXIA site & saw all the video/photo montages of the flood damage to people’s homes (and in some cases, entire subdivisions), I immediately resolved to stop grumbling. I’m extremely grateful that we’ve escaped with very minor damage, thus far! Many of the people affected weren’t even in areas designated as floodplain, so most of them had no flood insurance– I’m calling the Red Cross to find out how I can help folks here in GA who’ve suffered such huge losses.
