    Flooding Near Decatur High School

    Decatur Metro | December 1, 2010 | 10:57 am

    Holy cow.

You’ve gotta see this photo that was sent into Fox5 yesterday of flooding across from Decatur High School!  That’s East Maple, correct?

Geez, I didn’t realize things were quite that bad yesterday.

Maloof Auditorium & Montclair Elementary Closed Due to Flooding

    Decatur Metro | May 3, 2010 | 4:06 pm

The AJC is reporting that both Montclair Elementary School up between Buford Highway and Clairmont Road and the Maloof Auditorium in downtown Decatur have been closed due to flooding.

Montclair students were moved to Cross Keys High School after a creek near the school flooded.  The Maloof Auditorium had no such excuse.  It’s just a mess.

County commissioners said the Commerce Drive auditorium’s roof is leaking and damaged several ceiling tiles.

The commission announced Monday morning that it is moving its Tuesday meeting to the Decatur library auditorium on Sycamore Drive.

“The roof has leaked to the point it was raining in the auditorium,” Commissioner Larry Johnson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Although the fallen ceiling tile debris is being removed, the carpet is wet. Getting it ready for tomorrow won’t happen with continued rain in the forecast.”

An estimated repair cost was not immediately available.

    South Fork Peachtree Creek flooding

    Andisheh Nouraee | May 3, 2010 | 3:26 pm

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for South Fork Peachtree Creek, which flows just north of Decatur. The creek was already above flood stage by noon today.

Here’s an image of South Fork Peachtree Creek at about 1:00PM today. As you can see, it had already reached the bottom the Clairmont Lake bridge (100 feet upstream from the Clairmont Road bridge).

South Peachtree Creek at Clairmont Lake bridge

Please be safe and don’t walk or drive through flood waters. It seems like an obvious enough warning, but someone always does it.

Decatur CodeRed Sends Out Flash Flood Warning

    Decatur Metro | January 24, 2010 | 6:54 pm

Decatur just sent out a CodeRed Flash Flood Warning. The AJC reports that flood warnings will remain in effect throughout the evening and into Monday morning.

I haven’t been out all day, so all I can report is that, yes, the muddy, basement river has returned.  But there are a couple of more relevant and useful Twitter reports of flooding in and around the city of Decatur.

    • @claymaker posted two photos (one and two) of flooding around his house.
    • @DecStan reports “Serious flooding on Scott Blvd (#DecaturGA) in low spot between Clairemont and Superior.” Does he mean between Clairemont on Ponce @ Westchester?

    What’s it doing around you?

CSD: City Planning and Foresight Prevented School Flooding

    Decatur Metro | September 22, 2009 | 12:41 pm

I inquired with Asst. Superintendent Thomas van Soelen about the extent of flooding at CSD facilities.  Bottomline is that while there were a couple issues, overall CSD is grateful to the city for its stormwater management planning.

    Here’s Thomas’ response…

    No official flooding.

Summary of leaks that have been rectified:

    * Winnona Park: 2 rooms and cafeteria, debris washed down onto the drainage covers (even though we wash them every day)

    * Oakhurst: slight amount of water at cafeteria

Kudos to the city of Decatur for their fine work in stormwater management. Their planning and foresight prevented flooding in our facilities.

    College Heights Flooding

    Decatur Metro | September 21, 2009 | 6:50 pm

Irishlass sends in these pics of flooding of the lake at Roy Moss Park across the street from College Heights school.  According to Lass…

It’s a flood plain serving it’s purpose well these past 7/8 days.

    She also adds…

And a tree down in my neighbor’s yard on Garland Ave, which faces onto Roy Moss Park, missed his house by inches so feeling pretty lucky over here.

    Atlanta / Decatur Flooding Updates

    Decatur Metro | September 21, 2009 | 4:26 pm

    oakhurst creek

Nelliebelle sent in this pic of the “new Oakhurst Creek.”

Use this post to report flooding around Decatur and Atlanta.

I’ve given over the right column to Twitter updates for the moment to keep folks updated on the latest flooding reports in the area.

Stay safe out there everyone and don’t drive through any pools of water too deep to see the bottom.
