Arriving at 450

Decatur Metro | November 22, 2008

UPDATE: Confirming my suspicions that the 450 number isn’t just the 441 births from 2000-07 rounded up to 450, MrFixIt reports in the comments that Rosser’s calculation is more complex than just that..though we do not yet have details.  I guess that’s the danger of posting presentations without the audio to go along with it.  Data is easily misinterpreted.

As a result…the video below is inaccurate and will need to be updated.

Pat Harold created this YouTube video showing the issue many have with Rosser’s 450 new students coming from the proposed annexation area. [h/t: InDecatur]

As shown in the Rosser Report, resident births are only calculated from 2000-2006, which comes out to 441 when all is said and done. As has been stated here by Judd and MrFixIt, the problem is that (obviously!) children attend school for 13 years, not seven. So why is it only calculated for seven years?

Are all children in the annexation area NOT immediately transferred from DeKalb to Decatur Schools? Would it only effect younger kids?

And how does the ’466′ 17 & under number come into play on page 17 of the report?

Parker's On Ponce Now Open!

Decatur Metro | November 22, 2008

akb writes in with news that Decatur’s only independent steakhouse, Parker’s on Ponce, is now open in the old, desirable Mick’s space on Ponce.  Funny, I just checked their website the other day, but it still had nothing on it.  But apparently they opened Tuesday…see her note below!

My husband and I were looking for a place to eat last night and noticed Parkers is now open, so we went in. They said they opened on Tuesday. (I’m surprised you didn’t post this, DM! We look to you for all the restaurant updates ;)

The place looks great, the steaks were tasty and the staff was very friendly, although the food was a bit slow to arrive, but they will work those kinks out. They mentioned that the grand opening is sometime in mid-December.

Guess it was a pretty quiet open.   My wife said that it didn’t even look open when we drove by just an hour ago (I was too busy feeling out the new crosswalk), but maybe word just isn’t out yet.

Well, now it is!  Can’t wait to try it out!

DeVry Reports Strong Enrollment

Decatur Metro | November 22, 2008

In a recent AJC article, DeVry reports strong enrollment even in this tough economy.

If enrollment remains healthy, it seems like new resident DeVry could help downtown Decatur weather the economic downturn.
