The Answer is: Goats?
Decatur Metro | September 3, 2008The AJC reports from the city commission meeting on a potential answer to my question from a few days back about what to do with all that kudzu in the cemetery woodlands. Apparently it could be goats.
Sounds like Decaturmom’s suggestion of guinea pigs wasn’t that far off.
Darn! I hate it when the AJC beats me to all the good goat stories!
I knew someone who had a goat once….ate EVERYTHING! might be a good solution.
Can someone explain to me how goats will be more “environmentaly friendly”? Let’s see, you feed a farm animal a high-fiber diet of Kudzu. What do you think the result will be? Are they going to install little goat-sized composting porta- potties?
No, it will wash down into the creek. Along with their commonly-carried goodies like giardia and cryptosporidium.
But wait! Maybe we can hit ‘em with some antibiotics (or whatever works) before putting them to work– so those can end up in the creeks too!
My vote is for Roundup. At least we know it works and is rendered inactive once it hits soil. And the sooner the better– while we still have some trees left there.
you know you can eat Kudzu…maybe some of the resturants downtown should start putting it on their menu…
Talk about locally grown!
Agnes Scott used to have goats to eat the vegetation around their retaining pool. We loved to go visit them. I don;t know why they got rid of them.
I’ve wondered that too, Paula. I should ask–I work at ASC!
I’m from Boulder, and they use goats to trim the grass along major streets (Foothills, for those of you who know Boulder…). I think its great…and it beats the chain gang.
It’s not Kudzu, but LA’s in on the goat trend . . .
