Publix To Recycle Unbought Perishables
Decatur Metro | August 9, 2008Nothing like a little recycling news to start the weekend…
Fruits, veggies, meat and bread that once may have ended up in the trash, will soon be recycled thanks to a new partnership between Publix Supermarkets and Organic Recovery, according to a blurb in yesterday’s Atlanta Business Chronicle.
Ok….. ignorant Q of the day….. exactly what does one do with “recycled” decaying meat ?
Fertilizer…
I’m not sure how noble the work of Organic Recovery is, but I can share a story that shows personal nobility as its best, and maybe a better use of old food.
While in Carmel, CA recently, my wife and I were invited to assist Nancy Costello, a 90 year old woman who for over 40 years has collected expired food from supermarkets and delivered it to hungry migrant farm workers as much as 60 miles away from her home. We met her at a Safeway at 9 am on a Monday morning and helped her load a Ford F-450 truck with fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat and bread. We then followed her to a Trader Joe’s and repeated the process. And then we watched as she drove away to begin her rounds. She does this 6 days a week! She has been called the “Saint of the Hungry” and, while working with her, we truly felt that we were in the presence of a saint.
For her extraordinary service, in 2007 Nancy was awarded the Jefferson Award, which is given for outstanding public service. Here’s a link to a nice story about Nancy. http://www.ksbw.com/news/13533040/detail.html
