Marc Cohn Coming to Eddie's Attic!

Decatur Metro | July 23, 2008

Somebody pinch me. One of my absolute favorite musicians is coming to Eddie’s Attic on Saturday, September 20th!

Marc Cohn will play both an early and late show at the Attic, on tour supporting his first album in 10 years, Join the Parade. Tickets are more expensive than usual at $35 a pop for General Admission and $150 for a table of 4. Get them here while they last.

Many people know Cohn mainly for his early hit single, Walking in Memphis, or more recently for surviving being shot in the head by a carjacker in 2005. But to me, and a very loyal following of fans who have listened to his three albums continually, waiting 10 years for a fourth, Cohn is one of the great songwriters of his time. He rarely tours (though I think this is his second trip to Atlanta in as many years) so a chance to see him in such a personal venue like Eddie’s is a great stroke of luck for Decatur.

Nease's Needlework Closing and Going Online

Decatur Metro | July 23, 2008

I noticed a sign in the window of Nease’s Needlework last night that announced they were having a “Going on the Internet Sale”. A check of their website finds this…

“With the down-turn in the economy, Nease’s Needlework is closing its brick and mortar shop effective August 23/24. We will miss seeing you, though we are available for on-line and in-person project consultation, needlework help, and the like. In fact, we will probably be even more available starting in September so make sure you keep this website bookmarked and our phone number on speed-dial!

However, if you are a customer of the brick and mortar shop, we will be open our normal business hours (Mon, Tues, Friday 11:00-6:00, Thurs 10:00-8:00, and Sat. 11:00-5:00) till August 23, and we may even be open Sundays through the latter part of August if business warrents it. We’re also having a “Going on the Internet” sale starting on Monday July 21 as follows: 10% off all in-store merchandise the week of July 21, 20% off storewide during the week of July 28, 30% off storewide starting August 3, and 40% off from August 10 onwards. (And no, we will not hold an item for a week so that you can get a better discount!) We will not be able to accept any more framing or finishing from this point forward, and the only special orders we can accept are project emergencies.”

Too bad, but for many businesses the lower overhead and larger audience of going to the internet provides a better chance of turning a profit.

All the best to Nease’s! Check out their online shop here!

DeKalb Boil Water Advisory In Effect…

Decatur Metro | July 23, 2008

UPDATE III: Drink up! Water is now safe according to DeKalb thru the AJC.

Here’s the release…provided by the city…

DECATUR – DeKalb County has lifted the precautionary boil water advisory
for all zip codes. DeKalb County Watershed Management officials
conducted several test. Based on the results, officials have determined
that all water is safe for drinking and normal use.

It is not necessary to flush any lines based on the test results.

UPDATE II: DeKalb officials are now saying that the boil water advisory could stretch until Friday.

UPDATE: 11Alive is reporting that the boil water order will stay in effect until tomorrow (Thursday) [thanks Carl!]

…thanks to Scott Candler Water Plant.

I’m sure by this point, most Decaturites have received the CodeRed alert about the Boil Water Advisory issued by DeKalb County. Thanks to Carl, altmod and Linda Harris for the tipoffs.

Here’s DeKalb County’s release, courtesy of Linda. She notes that DeKalb is saying (thru the AJC) that this is just mainly a precaution, since service was restored quickly.

DEKALB ISSUES BOIL WATER ADVISORY FOR AVONDALE,
CHAMBLEE, DECATUR AND DORAVILLE AREAS
DECATUR – DeKalb County has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for Avondale,
Chamblee, Decatur and Doraville areas, which includes zip codes: 30319, 30030, 30340, 30341

30345, 30033, 30329, 30084, 30087, 30083, 30030, 30002, 30307, 30306, 30079, 30021, 30032, 30333 and 30088 (These are currently the affected zip codes. The county will continue to send updates as information becomes available.) Residents in the affected areas are being
asked to boil water for at least 3 minutes prior to drinking or cooking until further notice.

At approximately 6:50 p.m., DeKalb County Watershed Management officials were notified that the Scott Candler Water Plant lost power due to severe weather in the area.

Watershed officials immediately started working to restore water pressure to the system. There
are some reports of low to no water pressure in the affected areas. DeKalb County Health
Department is aware of the situation and will work to notify area hospitals and restaurants.
Below is additional information concerning the boil water advisory:
* Do not drink water unless you know it is safe.
* Do not bathe in the water unless you know it is safe.
* Do not cook with the water unless you know it is safe.
* Do not brush teeth with the water unless you know it is safe.
* Do NOT use the water in homes or restaurant locations to make ice unless you know it
is safe

Hmm…l’ll try not to think about all the water I’ve already used this morning. Should’ve bathed in boiling water I guess…better than a fresh cuppa’ joe!
