Zalc Arquitetura’s Innovative Design
Zalc Arquitetura has masterfully redesigned a 1,076-square-foot apartment in Perdizes, São Paulo, Brazil, blending industrial elements with modern flair. The FM Apartment showcases the artistic inclinations of its inhabitants through the use of vivid colors, artisanal touches, and an open floor plan that emphasizes connectivity and adaptability.
Improving the flow of movement between the kitchen, terrace, and living area was a key initial goal. The architects achieved this by merging the exterior with the main communal spaces, thus creating a more expansive and luminous setting. In the private quarters, the master suite has been upgraded with an en suite bathroom that mimics the opulence of a hotel. Moreover, the guest bathroom was resized to enhance the spaciousness of both the powder room and the entrance hall.

Color is pivotal in shaping the ambiance of the dwelling. The entrance and bathrooms are adorned with handcrafted hydraulic tiles in a striking cobalt blue, setting a bold precedent for the home’s decor. This intense color contrasts with the more subdued blues used in the kitchen cabinetry and extends into the master bedroom with carefully selected accents.
The residence features black surfaces, including custom millwork and tiles, which inject depth and an industrial vibe into the space. These darker shades are offset by lighter neutrals like the polished concrete floors, white ceilings, and warm wooden fixtures, crafting an environment that is both daring and comfortable.
The living room is equipped with a versatile, modular island sofa specifically designed to suit a variety of needs, from socializing to relaxation. Plants are subtly integrated into the decor, with tropical varieties adorning suspended shelves in the living area and creeping into the bathroom, tempering the harshness of the industrial materials with a hint of nature.
The kitchen island thoughtfully includes a special area for the family’s pet, equipped with a filtered water dispenser, ingeniously marrying functionality with considerate design.
Distinctiveness is evident throughout the apartment. In the master bathroom, a unique suspended urinal is attached to a metal column. Privacy is maintained via strategically placed greenery that obscures the view of the urinal from the bedroom through black-framed glass panels, ensuring the area maintains a refined feel.
The powder room is enveloped in black tiles accented with an array of white dots of various sizes, creating a bold and immersive environment. This striking design continues along the floors, walls, and ceiling, transforming a small space into a memorable visual experience.
