Transforming an Old Workshop into a Modern Apartment in Ermionida, Greece

In the picturesque region of Ermionida, Greece, what was once a machinery workshop has been transformed into Apartment V, a modern and lively living space. This project, executed by Anastasia Naki of Naki Atelier, has revitalized a previously industrial space by infusing it with contemporary design features while respecting its historical essence.

The apartment covers an area of 807 square feet and is designed to maximize the inflow of natural light. The main entrance is encased with a wall of glass blocks that not only allows sunlight to penetrate the space but also ensures privacy. The design concentrates on the single external-facing facade to allow ample daylight to permeate, thus enhancing both the overall ambiance and the energy efficiency of the home.

Strategic Design and Layout

The internal layout of the apartment is meticulously organized into two main areas. One is a private section which houses two bedrooms and a bathroom, connected through a corridor leading from the kitchen. The other is a public section, featuring a wide, open-plan living space that adeptly merges different functional areas without sacrificing either comfort or design integrity.

A standout aspect of the renovation is the cherry red suspended steel loft that adds a vibrant touch to the space. Positioned above the kitchen and dining area, this loft serves as an additional relaxation space and plays a crucial role in altering the room’s spatial perception, especially the height. It introduces a cozy feel that balances out the spaciousness created by the 14-foot-high ceilings. This architectural feature ensures there is an open yet distinct connection between the apartment’s various zones, fostering a warm, inviting atmosphere.

The staircase leading to the mezzanine is another eye-catching feature. It begins at the back of the kitchen island and makes a 90-degree turn, continuing upwards with steps that maintain the red theme linking the two levels.

Material Choices Reflecting Past and Present

The materials used in Apartment V are a nod to both the industrial past of the building and a bold, modern aesthetic. A red steel framework serves as the cornerstone of the design, reminiscent of the space’s original industrial function. Custom-made stainless steel furniture continues this theme, enhancing the industrial vibe of the apartment. To soften the harder edges and industrial feel, the interior is decked out with Tinos green marble, brightly colored tiles, thick textiles, and raw birch plywood. Each material is chosen not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its ability to add texture and warmth to the living space.

Through thoughtful design and careful material selection, Apartment V stands as a prime example of how industrial spaces can be beautifully and effectively converted into functional, contemporary homes while preserving a hint of their historical significance.
