In the vibrant city of Kraków, Poland, a young couple discovered their ideal apartment, expertly crafted by Butterfly Studio. Covering an area of 84 square meters (around 900 square feet), this apartment underwent a complete transformation by architects Anna Baranowska and Joanna Felczuk, who tailored the space to their clients’ penchant for lively hues and vintage charm, while ensuring the space remained practical for everyday living.
Strategic Design and Functional Space
The architectural focus was on optimizing the apartment’s layout for better functionality. The original floor plan was modified by removing a room, which opened up the space for a larger, more fluid living area. This redesign facilitated the inclusion of an L-shaped sofa and a multi-functional extendable dining table, catering to the couple’s need for a sociable and adaptable living space. The kitchen was also redesigned to become a welcoming hub, featuring a bespoke island that swapped traditional bar seating for hidden storage options.
Colorful Ambiance and Artistic Touches
Color is a dominant element throughout the apartment, creating a vibrant atmosphere. A palette of greens, rust, blues, and burgundies covers various surfaces, creating a dynamic visual play offset by textural diversity and striking patterns, such as a checkered rug and ornately patterned entry tiles. Additionally, lighting fixtures not only illuminate but also serve as sculptural elements, from the hanging pendants above the sofa to the creative lights adorning the hallway.

Welcoming Entryway and Cohesive Motifs
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a captivating burgundy built-in wardrobe and a sculpturally rounded bench, setting a sophisticated tone right from the doorway. This geometric theme is consistently echoed throughout the apartment, visible in the softly curved kitchen island and the rounded shapes of the media cabinet, thus maintaining a cohesive aesthetic throughout the space.
Transforming Challenges into Features
Initially, a lengthy and somewhat awkward hallway presented a design challenge, but it was cleverly transformed into a highlight of the apartment. Decorative wall sconces project intriguing shadows, while refined millwork in subdued tones adds texture and depth. A bold anthracite wall contrasts sharply with lighter elements, giving the hallway a distinct, vibrant character.
Serene Bedroom and Unique Bathrooms
The bedroom is a haven of peace, with walls painted in calming shades of green and a ceiling in terracotta tones, creating a snug and inviting atmosphere. A custom-made headboard, which cleverly incorporates a built-in vanity, enhances functionality within the space.
Each bathroom exhibits a unique style yet remains in sync with the apartment’s overall aesthetic. One bathroom features earthy, tactile surfaces with terracotta tiles and plaster resembling concrete, while the other boasts a more striking look with burgundy floors, denim-blue cabinetry, and cool blue tiles. Hidden behind these stylish designs are practical storage solutions, like a laundry unit with a woven front, ensuring the space stays organized and tidy.
This Kraków apartment beautifully combines style with practicality, creating a vibrant and functional home tailored to its owners’ tastes and lifestyle.
