Imagine a fashionable psychologist, a contemporary entrepreneur, and their two lively children moving into a classic apartment in the bustling center of São Paulo, Brazil. The result is a 3,767-square-foot duplex that beautifully balances adult sophistication with a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. The transformation was expertly handled by Karina Passarelli Arquitetura, creating a space that is both inviting and stylish, perfect for both adults and children to enjoy.
The renovation wasn’t a mere weekend affair. The family moved to a rural area temporarily as the extensive renovations took place, ready to give up the city apartment completely. However, upon seeing the transformed space, they decided to keep it alongside their countryside home. Now, the duplex serves as their weekday residence, while the country home is reserved for relaxing weekends.

The main goal of the redesign was to modernize the polished, marble-floored, classic apartment into a youthful, vibrant, and technologically advanced space. The first step was embracing contrasts. The existing sleek marble floors were complemented with elements like raw concrete, natural wood, and matte textures, creating a sophisticated yet approachable environment.
The focal point of the home is the expansive, light-bathed double-height living room. Dominated by a large glass wall offering views of the cityscape, this area features a vast modular sofa perfect for both quiet relaxation and family socializing. The space is also home to the iconic Up 5 armchair and matching Up 6 ottoman by Gaetano Pesce for B&B Italia, originally designed in 1969 and reissued in 1994. This striking pair adds a touch of postmodern flair and comfort to the living area.
The spacious dimensions of the apartment are matched with bold, functional furnishings. The design includes extensive seating for hosting, thick rugs that provide play areas for children, and durable yet stylish decor pieces. A neutral color scheme allows for the incorporation of striking color accents, geometric patterns, and unique furniture that enhance the space without overwhelming it.
Custom lighting solutions are implemented throughout, offering indirect light that accentuates the architectural details, sets the ambiance, and introduces an element of drama in a subtle manner. Furthermore, the apartment has been upgraded with the latest technology in plumbing, electrical systems, and home automation to ensure smooth operation of the home.
Unlike many city dwellings, this apartment boasts thoughtfully designed outdoor areas. The terrace on the upper level has been transformed with an integrated BBQ and a striking yellow pool lining, adding a vibrant touch to the outdoor space.
The master suite presents a more subdued atmosphere with its luxurious, open-plan design featuring gray tones, textured finishes, and a sophisticated, hotel-like ambiance. The bathroom extends the theme with graphic tiles and sleek finishes, creating a space that is both stylish and modern.
