John Lithgow Has a Message for Harry Potter Fans Unhappy With Him Playing Dumbledore

John Lithgow has responded to the criticisms regarding his role as Dumbledore in the upcoming Harry Potter television series. Lithgow, recognized for his numerous Emmy wins, was recently confirmed to portray the iconic wizard in the HBO adaptation, sparking some debate among fans due to his American heritage. Unlike his predecessors Richard Harris and Michael Gambon—who were Irish—Lithgow was born in New York.

In a conversation on BBC’s The One Show, Lithgow addressed the concerns by acknowledging, “I’m not an Englishman,” yet he highlighted his previous experience in British roles on television. He pointed out his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Netflix’s The Crown, a role that earned him his sixth Emmy in 2017, demonstrating his capability to embody quintessential British characters proficiently.

A Thrilling Opportunity

Lithgow expressed his excitement about taking on the role of Dumbledore, despite the initial backlash. “It’s an enormous thrill,” he stated, recognizing the challenge posed by those skeptical of an American playing such a beloved, typically English character. He reassured fans, “But I will do my best.”

The HBO series will also feature Janet McTeer as Transfiguration professor Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Potions master Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Hogwarts groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid.
