The upcoming revival of Scrubs is set to debut on ABC, and TVLine has compiled a detailed guide on what we know so far about the return of this beloved series.

Originally premiering on NBC in 2001, Scrubs followed Dr. John Dorian from his days as an intern to his role as an attending physician at Sacred Heart Hospital. After its seventh season, NBC chose not to continue the series, leading ABC to pick it up for an intended final eighth season. This season was meant to conclude with a finale that had been envisioned by creator Bill Lawrence years earlier. However, ABC decided to renew Scrubs for a ninth season, rebranded as Med School, introducing new characters alongside some from the original cast, with Kerry Bishé’s character, medical student Lucy Bennett, becoming the series’ new lead narrator.

The main cast of Scrubs included Zach Braff as JD, Donald Faison as Turk, Sarah Chalke as Elliot, Judy Reyes as Carla, John C. Returning Cast for the Scrubs Revival

Zach Braff is set to return as Dr. John Dorian for the upcoming tenth season of Scrubs, as confirmed by TVLine on May 21. Following the official announcement of the revival on July 10 by ABC, the returns of Donald Faison as Turk and Sarah Chalke as Elliot were also confirmed. Judy Reyes agreed to return as Carla in a recurring role on September 2, and two days later, John C. McGinley signed on to reprise his role as Dr. Cox occasionally. Bill Lawrence expressed his hopes in an interview with TVLine that the revival would check in on all the original characters, including possibilities for appearances by Neil Flynn and Ken Jenkins.

Who Will Not Be Returning?

Bill Lawrence remarked that the downside of the revival was the absence of Sam Lloyd, who passed away in 2020. Except for Lloyd, fans can expect to see all their favorite characters return. Unlike some series revivals that have altered their controversial endings, Scrubs will maintain the continuity established in its ninth season, potentially leaving room for appearances by the new characters introduced in that season. Bill Lawrence also mentioned that the show would primarily focus on the original core cast members.

Behind the scenes, though Bill Lawrence will be involved in the revival, he will not be the showrunner due to his commitments with Warner Bros. Instead, Scrubs veterans Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra will serve as co-showrunners.

Zach Braff shared that the revival would retain the original series’ blend of humor and emotion but would portray a more seasoned JD, disillusioned by the medical system over the years.
