Dawson Leery’s Return to “Dawson’s Creek” Canceled
Unfortunately, fans of “Dawson’s Creek” will not see Dawson Leery make a comeback. James Van Der Beek, who portrayed the main character in the iconic WB series, has had to withdraw from a scheduled “Class Reunion” event set for Monday. The event was meant to feature a live reading of the original pilot script by the entire cast. Van Der Beek has cited a severe stomach illness as the reason for his absence, which he detailed in a post on Instagram.
Van Der Beek expressed his disappointment on social media, stating, “This evening was what I was most looking forward to ever since my dear friend Michelle Williams began organizing it back in January,” he shared. “Imagine my dismay when not one, but two stomach bugs hit me hard, leaving me incapacitated at the most inopportune time. Despite my best efforts to recover in time, I’m sad to say I won’t be able to join.”
The Show Must Go On
Despite Van Der Beek’s unfortunate withdrawal, the event will proceed with a celebrity replacement. Lin-Manuel Miranda, famed for his role in “Hamilton,” will step in to perform as Dawson. Van Der Beek humorously noted, “I DO have an understudy. A wonderfully overqualified one who would have topped my list had I thought he’d be available. Someone whom my children would surely see as a step up from me… Plus, he knows his way to the theater, which is a bonus. So, the role of ‘Dawson,’ normally played by me, will now be portrayed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It’s surreal even typing this out.”

The “Dawson’s Creek” “Class Reunion” was first announced in August and aims to bring together stars such as Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, Mary Beth Peil, John Wesley Shipp, Mary-Margaret Humes, Nina Repeta, Kerr Smith, Meredith Monroe, and Busy Philipps. This gathering, set to occur at New York City’s Richard Rodgers Theatre for one night only, will not only serve as a nostalgic reunion but also as a fundraiser. The proceeds will be donated to F Cancer, supporting Van Der Beek himself who recently revealed his diagnosis of Stage 3 colorectal cancer in November. This event marks the first reunion of the entire cast since the series concluded in 2003 after six seasons.
