A Key Storyline from James Gunn’s Superman Will Influence Peacemaker Season 2
Indeed, the influence is mutual between James Gunn’s Superman movie and the upcoming second season of Peacemaker.
Viewers might remember from the first season of the HBO Max series that Chris Smith, portrayed by John Cena, had an ordinary-looking home with a peculiar feature: a door with a keypad lock that led to an expansive and seemingly infinite area called the Quantum Unfolding Storage Area (QUSA).
This extra-large space served as a storage for Auggie (Robert Patrick), Chris’s father, to keep his White Dragon suit and Chris’s Peacemaker helmets. However, in Season 2, this area becomes even more central to the plot.

An intriguing scene from the initial trailer of the season shows Chris, clad in his tighty-whiteys, discovering a second door within the QUSA, only to encounter his own doppelgänger on the other side.
Linking Dimensions: The Shared Concept of a Pocket Universe
In the cinematic world of James Gunn’s Superman, the infamous villain Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, ingeniously utilizes a self-created pocket universe. This secretive space notably houses a covert prison among other functions. Gunn highlights a similarity to the QUSA used in Peacemaker, although with fewer complications.
Gunn elaborated on this concept in an interview with EW.com following the Superman movie, indicating that the entire season of Peacemaker revolves around the pocket universe idea. He humorously notes that the one in Peacemaker is more refined compared to Lex Luthor’s, which he describes as “much jankier.”
Further discussing the implications of the QUSA, Gunn mentioned that it introduces potential for multiverse-style plots within the DC TV series, albeit executed in a distinctly different manner than what has been typical in recent superhero narratives.
Gunn sees Peacemaker as a high-concept narrative focusing more on an alternate reality, drawing a parallel to Philip Roth’s 1996 novel The Counterlife rather than mainstream multiverse stories like the third Spider-Man film, No Way Home. He expresses a preference for simplicity, emphasizing that the story is fundamentally about Chris Smith’s connection to this alternate dimension.
The Cross-Pollination of Concepts Between Superman and Peacemaker
Gunn clarified that the shared theme of a pocket universe between Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 wasn’t the reason for John Cena’s brief cameo in the new DC Universe film. He assured that Cena’s appearance was planned regardless of the thematic overlap, motivated by the character’s fit into the scenario portrayed in the film.
He concludes by sharing his vision of Cena’s character appearing on a provocative talk show, fitting the profile of the kind of controversial figures one would expect in such a setting.
