Controversy Surrounds “The Golden Bachelor” Star
The recently unveiled lead for the upcoming season of The Golden Bachelor, Mel Owens, has found himself embroiled in controversy due to remarks he made about not wanting to date women over 60. Despite being 66 himself, Owens expressed these views during a podcast in June, leading to significant backlash. However, he is now making efforts to rectify his statements.
In a fresh interview with Glamour, Owens, who is about to become the face of the second season of ABC’s dating show for seniors, openly addressed the criticism he faced. He admitted that his comments were ill-considered, calling them “a mistake” and acknowledging that they were “unfair” and “insensitive.” Owens, who has already begun filming the new season, shared that he took the opportunity to apologize directly to the contestants: “Right when I walked in, I tackled the issue. I apologized, asking them for a chance to make things right.”
Owens Faces the Consequences of His Words
Owens revealed that the current season’s contestants, all women in their 60s, have surprised him with their vitality and intelligence. Although ABC has yet to announce the contestants officially, Owens hinted at experiencing a taste of playful retaliation from them during filming: “I faced a roast on one of the dates. It was harsh but fair, and I accepted that because I deserved it.”

Reflecting on his controversial remarks, Owens explained that his unfamiliarity with the show’s format led to his misunderstanding about the age range of the contestants. He mistakenly assumed the participants would be between 45 and 60 years old, referring to those years as his “gold years.” Owens admitted his perspective was outdated, having been formed when he last dated at the age of 39 or 40, over two decades ago.
Owens is hopeful that viewers who might have been turned off by his earlier comments will reconsider and tune in to the show. He believes the season will highlight the remarkable lives of these senior women, describing his own experience on the show as “life-altering” and confessing that it has expanded his understanding significantly.
