President Trump Celebrates Stephen Colbert’s Cancellation: ‘I Hear Jimmy Kimmel Is Next’

President Donald Trump has shared his thoughts on the termination of CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, expressing great pleasure at the news.

Trump celebrated the news on his Truth Social platform, stating, “I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert!”

He also added, “Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined,” referring to the Fox News host and criticizing the current host of NBC’s The Tonight Show by calling him “the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show.”

Five years prior, The Late Show drew nearly four million viewers each episode. However, by 2025, the show’s viewership had declined to an average of 2.42 million nightly viewers. Despite the drop, Vulture notes that Colbert still maintained a lead over ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! with 1.8 million viewers and NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with 1.2 million viewers.

Meanwhile, Gutfeld! on Fox News, which is broadcast at 10 pm ET, a bit earlier than the typical late-night slot, averages 3 million viewers each night.

In a poignant moment during the beginning of Thursday’s show, Colbert informed his audience from his desk that the upcoming season would be the show’s last, with the network planning to end The Late Show in May. This announcement was met with audible disapproval from the audience, to which Colbert responded, “Yeah, I share your feelings.”

The Late Show franchise, which began in 1993 with David Letterman, will also be coming to an end. CBS explained that the decision to cancel the show was purely financial, driven by the challenging economic conditions in the late-night television landscape, and was not influenced by the show’s content, performance, or any issues at Paramount, CBS’s parent company.

It’s also notable that Paramount recently settled a lawsuit for $16 million that was filed by Trump. The lawsuit concerned an interview with his 2024 political opponent, Kamala Harris, which Trump claimed was deceptively edited by the renowned news program.

Upon returning from vacation, Colbert referred to the settlement as a “big fat bribe,” further stirring the ongoing controversy surrounding the show’s cancellation.
