If you’re anything like me, your ChatGPT sidebar has become a sprawling archive of half-finished travel plans, work briefs and recipe experiments. Scrolling back days—or even weeks—to find that one crucial chat can feel like hunting for a needle in a haystack. Thankfully, there’s now a straightforward way to keep your interactions tidy: the new Projects feature lets you bundle related conversations into folders, so everything stays conveniently together.
With Projects, ChatGPT will make it easier to revisit old conversations
Previously, chats were listed purely in chronological order—your latest query perched at the top, older ones gradually disappearing down the page. I recall spending five minutes last week hunting for my holiday itinerary discussion, only to lose the thread entirely. According to IDC, knowledge workers spend up to 30 per cent of their time searching for information they already own, so this isn’t just a minor irritation but a genuine productivity drain.

Enter Projects, designed to bring structure to your ChatGPT workspace. You can create a project titled “Summer Getaway” or “Interview Prep” and pin all relevant chats in one place. OpenAI describes Projects as “a way to anchor your most important conversations and access them instantly,” ensuring you never lose sight of key details again. It’s a simple change, but one that transforms your chat history from a flat list into a customised, theme-based library.

Collaborate across discussions with shared files and instructions
Beyond neat categorisation, Projects offers two powerful collaboration tools:
-
Shared files: Upload documents—flight confirmations, research PDFs or presentation decks—that remain available in every conversation within the project. No more re-uploading the same file seven times.
-
Shared context: Set a single instruction or background note for your project, so ChatGPT can adapt its replies consistently. For example, you might outline your target audience or style preferences once, and the assistant will remember them across all pinned chats.
These additions turn Projects into more than just a folder system; it becomes a collaborative hub where context and resources travel with your conversations.

The Projects feature is rolling out to all users
Projects began appearing in ChatGPT on 13 December and is already available to all ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers. Free-tier users will gain access in the coming weeks, as OpenAI phases in the update. Once you see the “Create project” button on your home screen, you’re ready to start grouping chats, sharing files and streamlining your workflow.
By harnessing Projects, you’ll reclaim time spent hunting through old threads, boost your productivity, and enjoy a smoother, more organised ChatGPT experience—no more frantic scrolling, just quick access to the conversations that matter.
