CLB Architects Craft Stunning Multigenerational Mountain Home: A Masterpiece in Wyoming!

Located atop a butte in Jackson, Wyoming, the newly constructed Skyview residence, designed by CLB, transcends the typical concept of a home, acting more like a conduit that connects the terrestrial to the celestial. Encircled by the northern Teton Range and Sheep Mountain to the east, the structure appears to float above the valley, a sensation amplified by its strategic positioning on the sharply inclined landscape. The architectural design merges traditional and contemporary influences, incorporating natural materials, expert craftsmanship, and eco-friendly technologies to establish a multigenerational retreat for a New York family.

The project was deeply collaborative. “Our connection with the homeowner is central to this narrative,” comments Eric Logan, a partner at CLB. “Thanks to the trust and understanding developed over time, we were able to push boundaries and achieve a design that we’re all truly proud of,” Logan adds. The homeowner, originally from the East Coast and accustomed to the grandeur of her New York home, sought a distinct, tactile, and warm ambiance for her family’s western hideaway, one that echoed the rugged surroundings. CLB delivered a design that balances shelter with openness, and introspective spaces with dramatic, sweeping vistas. Logan points out, “The residence is poised between a serene, introspective courtyard and breathtaking views across the valley below.”

Montana-sourced stone clads the exterior and extends indoors, blurring the lines between the home’s interior and the natural world outside. Inside, the warmth of cedar ceilings and walnut woodwork enrich the space, while blackened steel panels add a sophisticated touch to fireplaces and built-in features. These material selections reflect the natural environment and maintain a harmony between traditional and modern design elements.

“We paired natural elements like leather, wood, and stone with bespoke furniture that complements the interior architecture,” explains Sarah Kennedy, interior designer at CLB. “We utilized rich cedar and walnut to forge a connection with traditional styles, yet contrasted these with sleek, modern details.”

The emphasis on craftsmanship is evident throughout the residence. A sculptural light feature curves through the entry stairwell, a handmade dining table serves as the centerpiece for family meals, and custom rugs draw inspiration from the Snake River Valley’s topography. The design even extends to the lighting fixtures, crafted to evoke local rivers and lasso shapes.

Internally, the design opts for a warm, welcoming feel, steering clear of the minimalist, Scandinavian trends prevalent in recent years. The interior color scheme features earthy tones like sage greens, ochres, and burnt oranges that mirror the changing colors of the Wyoming landscape, ensuring the scenic views remain the focal point of the home.

The residence is equipped with a geothermal system, high-performance insulation, and a well-sealed structure, making it efficient for both summer and winter use. CLB conceptualized this as a “legacy home,” designed to endure through generations, minimizing environmental impact while enhancing comfort and livability.
