Nestled in a forested area on the outskirts of Warsaw, Poland, the Sadowski House stands as a unique modern residence, intricately linked to the globe-trotting experiences of its owners. Crafted by architects Wojciech Kotecki from BBGK Architekci and Katarzyna Mach, this home transcends traditional architectural forms to become a personal sanctuary and a living gallery of the owners’ travels. It demonstrates a fusion of contemporary Polish architectural styles with the personal narratives of its inhabitants, who desired a life intertwined with nature.
Design Inspired by Global Adventures
The homeowners, seasoned globe-trotters, sought to create not just a living space but a place that reflects their extensive travels. Their adventures across diverse terrains, from icy polar regions to expansive deserts, fueled their desire for a dwelling that not only houses them but also their collected artifacts and cherished memories. This vision led the architects to design a home that cleverly melds areas of retreat with open spaces, mirroring the owners’ adventurous ethos alongside their need for tranquility.
A Tribute to Nomadic Structures
The architectural design pays homage to the simplicity and durability of ancient nomadic shelters like tipis, yurts, and igloos, which facilitate communal living under a single unifying roof. This inspiration is reimagined into a modern context as a one-story structure topped with an expansive, tent-like roof, arranging all living spaces on one level. This layout fosters a continuous connection among the residents and with the encircling forest.

Merging Indoors with Outdoors
Strategically designed to erase the boundaries between interior and exterior living, the Sadowski House features extensive use of floor-to-ceiling windows, a 72-foot-long sliding window, and multiple courtyards that invite the outdoor scenery inside. At the core of the home is an atrium garden with a retractable glass roof, allowing the occupants to engage with the natural elements directly from within their home. This open design enhances natural ventilation and brings the external environment’s sounds, scents, and breezes indoors, reminiscent of how traditional shelters engaged with their surroundings.
Collaborative Interior and Landscape Design
In collaboration with interior designers Monika and Adam Bronikowski from HOLA DESIGN and landscape architect Marta Tomasiak, the homeowners actively participated in refining every detail of their home. The use of warm, natural materials such as wood, stone, terracotta, and ceramics, along with exotic plants in the atriums, contributes to a timeless and tropical modern ambiance. A standout feature is the incorporation of Vals quartzite, an exquisite stone the owners discovered during their travels in Switzerland.
A Personal Museum of Life’s Journeys
Inside, the house doubles as a personal museum where artifacts, sculptures, and paintings collected from various expeditions are displayed, each piece accompanied by its own story. A prominently placed grand piano in the living area underscores the family’s appreciation for music and culture, enriching their daily lives.
Intimate Interaction with Nature
The residence also features an indoor swimming pool, designed to offer panoramic views of the central atrium and glimpses of the forest through strategically placed windows set low in a stone wall. This setting allows the residents to remain visually connected to the central garden and the surrounding woodlands, whether they are swimming or relaxing by the poolside.
This home is a testament to the power of architecture in capturing and reflecting the personal histories and lifestyles of its inhabitants, blending seamlessly with the natural environment while serving as a canvas for their memories.
