Is Alien: Earth’s Wendy the New Ripley? The Star and EP Break Down What They Have in Common — Watch Video

FX’s latest show, Alien: Earth, focuses on a female protagonist battling a swarm of deadly extraterrestrials, drawing inevitable comparisons to Sigourney Weaver’s iconic Ripley from the Alien movie series.

Sydney Chandler, daughter of actor Kyle Chandler and known for her roles in Sugar and Pistol, plays the lead role of Wendy in Alien: Earth, which debuts on Tuesday, August 12 at 8/7c. Wendy is a “hybrid” synthetic character with the consciousness of a human child combined with robotic superhuman abilities. Chandler, speaking to TVLine, highlights the similarities between Wendy’s calm, methodical approach to the alien threat and Ripley’s character.

Character Depth and Inspiration

According to Chandler, showrunner Noah Hawley crafted Wendy’s character to be deeply layered and focused on the present, much like Ripley. “She operates on a ‘minute by minute’ basis, not looking too far ahead or dwelling on the past, but dealing with the here and now,” Chandler explains.

Chandler also points out that Wendy’s childlike mentality helps her to remain in the moment, a trait that enhances her decision-making during crises. “Children possess a unique rationale, and Noah really respects and is fascinated by how a child’s mind operates,” she adds.

Influences and Character Dynamics

Hawley draws parallels between Wendy and another young character from the Alien series: Newt, the young girl from the 1986 sequel, Aliens, portrayed by Carrie Henn. He suggests that Wendy, much like Newt, embodies pure human emotion and perception. “Children are inherently genuine; they cannot disguise fear, they are not skilled at lying, and they observe the world without the biases adults learn over time,” Hawley notes.

Chandler finds it refreshing to portray a strong female character like Wendy, who actively engages in action scenes and exhibits control. “It’s exciting to play someone who is not scripted to be overly sentimental or vulnerable in traditional ways. Instead, Wendy shows her strength, whether it’s through anger or physical action,” she says.

Heroism and Core Values

Hawley emphasizes that despite the action-oriented scenes, Wendy, like Ripley, is not your typical action hero. Ripley was a space trucker, unexpectedly thrust into heroism. Similarly, Wendy’s heroism stems from her inherent decency, a theme Hawley explored in his series Fargo. “Wendy is fundamentally a decent person, and it’s this decency that will allow her to prevail against evil,” Hawley concludes.

Through the character of Wendy in Alien: Earth, FX introduces a new narrative that honors the legacy of strong, capable women within the Alien franchise, while also exploring new dimensions of character and storytelling.
