THE PERFORMANCE | The episode of The Last of Us where Joel meets his end was bound to be heart-wrenching regardless of the circumstances. However, Bella Ramsey’s portrayal of Ellie’s response upon discovering her adoptive father critically injured truly embedded the scene in our minds, haunting us long after.
In a swiftly evolving and emotionally charged scene, Ramsey delivered a powerhouse performance. Her portrayal of raw fear evolving into sheer terror as Ellie processed the sight of Joel’s grievous injuries was palpable. Each plea from Ellie, voiced with increasing desperation by Ramsey, for Joel to rise was heartbreakingly portrayed. Ramsey adeptly balanced intense physical action with profound emotional outbursts, culminating in a profoundly moving moment when a golf club became the instrument of Joel’s demise. In that critical instant, Ramsey masterfully conveyed Ellie’s profound regrets and unresolved feelings towards Joel, leaving viewers deeply moved.
The moment Ramsey dragged Ellie across the floor to be near Joel, using every ounce of energy left, remains unforgettable.
