THE ACT | From the storytelling of Mare of Easttown, it’s clear that creator Brad Ingelsby shies away from typical hero-villain binaries. His protagonists are deeply flawed, while his antagonists often display virtues. In Task, Tom Pelphrey’s portrayal of Robbie—a criminal embroiled in violence yet emotionally complex—stirs our empathy. This episode saw Robbie shedding his hardened exterior to reveal the motivations behind his recent wave of criminal activities.
Pelphrey brilliantly exposed Robbie’s raw emotional state right from the episode’s start. In an intense scene with his niece Maeve in the car, Robbie explained his vendetta against the Dark Hearts, who murdered his brother Billy. Pelphrey delivered a moving performance, tears in his eyes and voice trembling, as Robbie recounted the audacity of the killers attending Billy’s funeral. He described the theft of drugs as a rightful retribution for his brother’s death, erupting in fury when Maeve hinted at potential retaliation from the gang leader, Jayson. Pelphrey’s portrayal reached a peak as he thundered with raw emotion, challenging Jayson’s audacity to confront him again. However, his demeanor softened considerably when Maeve reminded him of the life worth living beyond his criminal endeavors, revealing Robbie’s fatigue with his current lifestyle through Pelphrey’s expressive surrender.
As the episode progressed, Robbie struggled to offload the suddenly burdensome stash of drugs. Pelphrey allowed the audience to feel the immense pressure Robbie was under. His portrayal included moments of vulnerability, particularly when Robbie confided in Cliff about his dreams of fleeing to Canada. Yet, it’s the earlier car scene that truly showcased the depth of Pelphrey’s ability to humanize Robbie, making him an intriguing character and contributing to the gripping nature of Task each week.

HONORABLE MENTION: David Giuntoli
Image Credit: ABC screenshot Known for his roles in Grimm and A Million Little Things, David Giuntoli has often portrayed characters that audiences naturally support. He has even lent his voice to Batman in several animation projects. However, his latest role in High Potential as the enigmatic Game Master, purportedly Matthew Clark, saw him adopting a darker, more complex persona. Giuntoli’s performance was particularly compelling in a scene involving a tense confrontation with Morgan behind a two-way mirror, maintaining a gripping intensity throughout the episode. With the facade of his character gradually cracking, Giuntoli kept viewers on edge, hinting at more thrilling encounters to come. — Andy Swift
