THE ACTING | The seventh season of Netflix’s dystopian series Black Mirror reached new heights, particularly with its episode titled “Eulogy,” a touching narrative about affection and mourning, anchored by Paul Giamatti’s profoundly moving performance. Giamatti, known for his exceptional roles in works like Sideways and The Holdovers, delivered one of the best performances of his career. His portrayal in “Eulogy” was both deep and nuanced, standing out as a career highlight.
“Eulogy” follows the classic Black Mirror formula with its genuine and poignant storytelling. Giamatti plays Phillip, a man confronting the past upon learning of his former girlfriend Carol’s death. A tech company enables Phillip to immerse himself in his old photos with Carol, reliving his memories in a virtual format. Initially hesitant due to their painful breakup—highlighted by Phillip’s act of defacing her photos—Giamatti masterfully reveals Phillip’s emotional barriers formed from years of bitterness. As Phillip revisits his memories, Giamatti skillfully brings a youthful spark back to his character, indicating a reignition of lost vigor. The unfolding story reveals the complexities of their relationship, leading Phillip to a profound realization of misplaced blame and regret.
Toward the end of the episode, an emotional scene featuring an aged Phillip watching a young Carol playing the cello is particularly striking, with Giamatti bringing tears of longing. This moment stands as one of the most poignant visuals in the series. Giamatti’s performance reminds viewers that beneath the often cold and intellectual facade of Black Mirror, there lies a core of human emotion and vulnerability.
FEATURED ACTOR | Zahn McClarnon
THE SERIES | Dark Winds
THE EPISODE | “Abidoo’niidee (What We Had Been Told)” (Apr. 13, 2025)
THE ACTING | In this week’s episode, Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn embarks on a surreal and introspective journey, with Zahn McClarnon’s performance capturing every nuanced revelation of his character. McClarnon engages the audience with Leaphorn’s every move and internal realization.
After being struck by a poison dart, Leaphorn finds himself in a mystical ‘Yellow World,’ as described by Margaret, the blind Listening Woman. Confusion and aimlessness are evident on McClarnon’s face as Leaphorn navigates this dreamlike state. The dreamscape challenges Leaphorn with visions and confrontations that force him to revisit painful memories and moral dilemmas from his past, including his father’s harsh justice on a corrupt priest and the implications of these actions on Leaphorn’s own sense of justice.
The narrative also explores Leaphorn’s personal sacrifices, emphasizing the recurring theme of his work-life balance, or lack thereof, which jeopardizes his family’s safety and happiness. McClarnon poignantly portrays Leaphorn’s deep love and subsequent regret toward his wife Emma, framing his performance with a profound sense of duty and sorrow.
