THE ACT | “Ghorman. Scarif. Kyber. Krennic. Erso.”
In the third-to-last episode of the Star Wars series, Kleya uttered little more than the series of words she echoed to Luthen, having just been briefed by the doomed Lonni in the episode’s opening scene. While it might have been tempting to celebrate Elizabeth Dulau’s performance in Episode 11, where Kleya urges Cassian to ensure Luthen’s efforts were not in vain, it was indeed Episode 10 where her portrayal was most stirring.
Shortly after learning of the “super weapon” Krennic had been secretly constructing for over a decade, Luthen and Kleya exchanged words. Initially, Kleya believed she would be the one to sabotage their communications hub at the gallery, but Luthen decided to take on the task himself, much to Kleya’s disappointment.
This mission interruption came at the hands of Dedra Meero, leading to Luthen’s desperate attempt at suicide to protect their secrets. From a distance, as Kleya saw Luthen being carted away by a medical team, Dulau’s emotional journey deepened, enhanced by flashbacks to 17 years earlier when Sergeant Lear became her guardian and mentor.
Every glance at Dulau’s face revealed a storm of emotions. As a practical spy, she understood the harsh necessities of their mission, including the need to complete what Luthen started with the ancient blade. Yet, Dulau masterfully conveyed Kleya’s silent torment over the prospect of ending her mentor’s life.
Dulau also excellently portrayed Kleya’s adeptness, previously only hinted at. She quickly adapted, seizing chances to sneak through hospital corridors. Her proficiency with a compact blaster and her clever use of explosives as a diversion showed her recalling a similar moment from her past.
Ultimately, Kleya conquered every challenge and reached Luthen’s ICU room. Without flinching, she disconnected the life-support system that was just barely keeping him alive. As he took his last breath, Dulau’s expression tightened, a single tear rolling down her cheek. In that moment, Kleya realized one chapter of her life was closing and another, unpredictable one, was about to begin.
