Before you rush to name your top picks, here are some guidelines to bear in mind:
* Historically, seven Law & Order franchises have been broadcast in the United States. We’re focusing on these iterations for your team selections. The lineup includes the original series, SVU, Criminal Intent, Trial by Jury, LA, True Crime, and Organized Crime. Note that Law & Order: Toronto, which premiered its first season in Canada and will soon launch in the U.S. on The CW, is not included in this selection.

* To manage the extensive list of characters, we’ve limited the selection to those who were series regulars. This means certain popular characters like SVU‘s Captain Curry won’t be available for selection.
* We’ve categorized the characters into two groups: LAW (members of the New York Police Department) and ORDER (employees of the district attorney’s office). You can choose four from LAW and five from ORDER. Notably, Dominick “Sonny” Carisi Jr. appears in both categories, reflecting his evolution in the series.
* An initial version of this post had these categories reversed. Originally, the idea was that police maintain order and lawyers deal with legal matters. However, after revisiting the introductory words of the original series, which define police as the enforcers of “law” and legal professionals as “order,” we have corrected the categories accordingly. DUN-DUN!
