Pierre Bonnard’s Influence in Modern Living Spaces
Pierre Bonnard, renowned for his Post-Impressionist works, often portrayed bathtubs prominently rather than tucking them away. In his artistic depictions, bathtubs were integrated seamlessly into daily settings, similar to other household objects like breakfast tables. This design philosophy is vividly brought to life in a Barcelona apartment located in the Turó Park area. Here, the bathtub is not hidden but instead openly displayed through an arched doorway under a ceiling of glossy green tiles, giving the impression that it’s simply another part of the living space.

The ultimate trick to banish mold from your bathroom grout in just 7 minutes—no vinegar or baking soda needed
Earlier this year, a 635-square-foot apartment was reimagined by SIGLA Studio for a client moving to Barcelona. Her previous residence suffered from a lack of natural light and was divided into several small, disconnected rooms. The move to a new city was seen as a chance to embrace a new lifestyle, which led to the choice of an open plan layout that allows light to flow freely throughout the space. At the heart of this new layout is a unique, doorless bathroom which can be optionally enclosed with glass for privacy.
Elegant and Functional Design Elements
The apartment features a galley kitchen on one side, outfitted in reflective aluminum-clad plywood, which combines practicality with a subtle aesthetic. In stark contrast, the bathroom steals the spotlight as the apartment’s centerpiece. It includes a stylish freestanding stainless steel sink next to the bathtub, with fluted glass enhancing the light distribution throughout the area.
The bathroom’s glass enclosure is custom-made and far from standard. “The pivoting glass enclosure was specifically designed by our studio and crafted by a local metalworker for this apartment,” explains Bernat Riera, co-founder of SIGLA Studio. This bespoke element is typically left open, allowing natural light to permeate the bathing area and illuminate the entire apartment.
Challenging Traditional Space Hierarchies
SIGLA Studio’s innovative approach was driven by questioning conventional home layouts: Why should interactive spaces be limited to the kitchen while other private areas remain concealed? Their design strategy eliminates the usual separation between public and private zones by creating a central unit that integrates the kitchen, bathroom, and dressing area into one cohesive space. This arrangement not only enhances sociability but also maximizes the use of space in a compact living environment.
