City of Decatur Announces Closings for Today, Reports No Accidents or Loss of Power

    Decatur Metro | January 29, 2014

The city sent out this announcement this morning…

Decatur’s roads and sidewalks are ICY, so please stay where you are and avoid driving if at all possible. City crews treated roads overnight with salt and sand, but with the low tempatures refreezing occurred. If you decide to venture out for a walk today please be extremely careful, as sidewalks are more slippery than roads in many places around the city.

    Today’s closings:

    • Decatur Recreation Center is closed today
    • Decatur Municipal Court is closed tonight. Please call to reschedule your hearing.
    • City Hall is operating with very limited staff.
    • The Design, Environment and Construction division of Public Works is closed today, as all staff that made it into work are focused on clearing roads, etc.
    • Tonight’s Town Hall meeting (“Review of the 2014 General Assembly Legislative Session”) hosted by state Rep. Rahn Mayo, state Rep. Howard Mosby and state Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver is cancelled. It will be rescheduled at a future date.

The good news is that there were no car accidents, no trees down and no loss of power in the City of Decatur last night. The few people who were stranded yesterday were able to make it home ok. Public safety personnel were able to do a number of winter weather welfare checks on seniors and other vulnerable residents. (And as a reminder, if you have a senior neighbor, please be neighborly and check on him or her today.)

If you need emergency assistance during this winter weather, please call the police non-emergency number at .

Please check www.theDecaturMinute.com later today for updates on the weather and possible closings tomorrow.

It’s Literally Wednesday: Snow Day Edition

    Dave | January 29, 2014
Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening (1922)
Whose woods these are I think I know.
    His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
    Robert Frost (1874-1963)

Live Blog: Atlanta/Decatur Road Conditions Open Thread – Wednesday

    Decatur Metro | January 29, 2014

OK, so here we go.  Going to try a live blog for the first time since the President’s visit.  Updates will appear below the original post.

Most businesses, schools and government offices/functions around Atlanta are closed since the roads are basically ice this morning.

Here’s a random assortment of pertinent links/info.  Will update as needed.  Please add more in the comments below.

    • Metro Atlanta remains gridlocked.
    • MARTA buses aren’t running.
    • MARTA trains are running but experiencing lengthy delays.
    • Late yesterday, The Decatur Minute posted about ice at N. Candler and Commerce.
    • DeKalb sent out this list of road closures late yesterday.
    • Gwyneth posted this pic of a bus trying to get up Ponce last night.  No wonder buses aren’t running.
    • A pic of stranded folks sleeping in a Home Depot

After the jump, GDOT’s 6a update of passable major roads around Atlanta.  Every major interstate except I-285 seems to be on there.  That doesn’t mean I-285 isn’t still a sheet of ice though.
