2011 Snow Day Open Thread
Decatur Metro | January 9, 2011The snow has started to fall in Decatur, which means it’s time to put up the snowday open thread.
Ask about sledding spots, talk about how well your Subaru 4-wheel drive works, or report power outages! It’s all fair game on the DM’s official Snowday Open Thread! Also, send in your pics and I’ll create a gallery for all your snow-bound neighbors to enjoy.
P.S. Yes, that pic is “Christmas snow” and not today’s snowfall.
Beware the wampa ambushes
I like your falling snow, DM.
Me too! Very cool.
Glad you like it!
I remembered that the free version of WordPress gave a snowfall option around Christmas years ago, so I went hunting for a plug-in. Low and behold, snow!
Love your snowfall effect too! My best advice is: Take Monday off if you can, even if your work isn’t closed. Or work at home. Timing-wise, Monday & Friday snow days are the best!
CSD’s website is down which leads me to believe they are putting some kind of message on it like a delay or closure. DeKalb County Schools are closed (and not just the 12 on the cutting block!).
WOHOO!!
Per 11 Alive
DeKalb County Schools
Dekalb County
Closed Tomorrow
Submitted at: 8:30 PM EST on Sunday, Jan 9
I think that means that we are too.
PS, I like the cool screen flakes
AJC says City schools closed tomorrow. Woo hoo!
But Atlanta city are still not closed, which means my office is not closed, yet, which means i may actually have to get up to check in the morning
APS is closed!
Just got the call from Decatur schools! No school!
Any word on Emory University?
You may already have heard this, but Emory is closed too.

Emory is closed Mon 1/10 and Tues 1/11
What about garbage pick-up?
That was my question also, but I would assume not, as any City Public Works employees who make it to work would be doing snow duty.
Postponed a day.

kennesaw state is closed. woooooo
That’s some gorgeous snow–huge flake–coating everything so quickly!
So we moved into Oakhurst in May (from City of Atlanta), from a house with a fireplace to one without… Soooo, if we lose power, what is the likely hood that a hotel within walking distance will have power and a vacancy…?
When I lived out West or up North, I always had firewood in house, lanterns, cook stove plus chains, blankets, and spare food in car. I’ve made it over many a mountain pass in horrible weather. HOWEVER, after being stuck on I-26 in the blizzard of 1993 where I was the only car on the road prepared, complete with cross-country skis, but couldn’t get my vehicle past the millions of stuck cars filled with whiny snowbirds in shorts and sneakers, I have learned a completely different approach to inclement weather in the South:
1. Do not get in vehicle: Roads and other drivers are not prepared even if you are.
2. Feel free to walk or ski to town in hopes that coffee or something is open (doubtful). You will amaze and delight your neighbors, especially if pregnant.
3. If the power goes out, immediately walk to Holiday Inn (whichever of the two has power) and make reservation for family. If trees are down on power lines, the outage can last 5-6 days and the thrill of camping in a frozen southern cottage fades quickly.
It’s not like it has never snowed here before…
Yeah, but Moonmommy was asking…..so let me answer her more specifically. In all the major power outages since I’ve lived in Decatur, the Holiday Inn in Decatur has always had power and been open. HOWEVER, sometimes it is full. Which is why step 1 in a major power outage is to go there in person, reserve a room, and take the key, before everybody else has the same idea. There’s even a problem with that strategy in a multi-day outage–sometimes there’s a convention there so you might not be able to reserve a room for the whole period of outage. One time, during a 5-6 day power outage, we had to go as far as Sidney Marcus Blvd. to a just opened hotel to find a room for the last few days. Everybody inside the Perimeter was desperate for warm lodging.
Left our sleds up North when we moved here. Anyone got a spare they could loan for 30 minutes on Monday? I doubt our 3 year old will even last that long out there, but what good is a snow day in a hilly place like Decatur without some sledding?
A piece of cardboard works wells, especially if you rub waxed paper on the side which will be next to the snow. And of course, cafeteria trays have a long history as stand in sleds.
An internet search I did this afternoon led me to the following link for homemade sleds:

What about the DeKalb courts. Do they stay open in something like this?
Adair Park Hill – here we come!
Just don’t sled near the Bicycle Man on Adair!!
Just went out to measure. At 10:45 pm it is 2 inches exactly, and it is still coming down hard.
errr, make that THREE inches.
Yeah. And the weather folk are still saying 3-5 inches for Atlanta.
These people are delusional. Or just stuck inside.
I just measured 3 inches on my car in Oakhurst.
3.5 inches at midnight and some animal tracks — up to the front and back doors. I think it’s a possum, maybe a raccoon, looking for warmth
Did you bring it inside?
LOL! You crack me up, girl!
No, but I can catch her for you. She’s a cute calico.
State government offices are mostly open, it seems. Anyone know a friendly state trooper who would get me to work downtown safely?
Dekalb courts are closed, as of 6:30 AM.
Feds mostly closed.
Buckle up – it’s Snowpomattox!!
Coke’s closed. Except for the polar bear, he’s still expected to report to the office.
Hey DM, start a link for what retail businesses are open.
Yes! Is Dancing Goats, Java Monkey, or Starbucks open? Getting a little desperate for caffeine here…..
Dancing Goats was closed as of about an hour ago. It looked like the Farm Burger may be opening. There was some activity there.
Can anyone identify these tracks? The little ones look kinda like a possum without the thumb. there was a black nose peeking out of the garage this morning.

No, but I bet Sarah Palin could.
Looks like a yeti gone astray.
They actually look like kitty tracks to me…a bit exaggerated b/c of the deep drifting snow effect, but kitty tracks nonetheless. Then again, I’m no Daniela Boone, so who knows?
Cat tracks is a good guess — there seems to be a hundred stray cats on my street.
Baby wampa.
Coyotes? The Clairemont/Great Lakes listserv reports a coyote pair walking in the snow.
That would be so cool! But if coyotes were on the street, we wouldn’t have the stray cat problem
Any idea what businesses are open in Decatur in general, or more specifically Oakhurst? We might have to take a little walk today!
Looking forward to taking our dog to the dog park to play in the snow!
Nice sledding on 3rd Avenue (the road itself), between Oakview and East Lake. Lots of neighborhood families out sliding down the hill, trying not to ram into one of the cars parked along the street.
First casualty of the snow day sledding – a broken finger. It’s not falling off or anything, so definitely is a non-emergeny. That said, it would be nice to have someone with more expertise than myself+WebMD to check it out. Any thoughts on a place to go on a day like this?
Where do you live? Maybe there’s a doctor who reads DM and lives around the corner.
Oh, Robbie, I hope you don’t have to go to the ER! That would be the 9th circle of hell!
Thanks NB!
Good idea DM. We’re down by Oakhurst village and are gladly willing to trade beer or bread (two things we currently seem to have in abundance) for local medical consult.
I’d be happy to do a legal consultation in exchange for beer. However, considering your offered payment method, I’m assuming we’d lose any case against the sled manufacturer to a contributory negligence defense
And of course, this would have been a better story if you had pulled a Ronnie Lott, cutting the finger right off so that you could continue sledding!
Am watching Jeff Hullinger on channel 11’s wall to wall snowpocalypse coverage and am wondering why he has a totally different face than he had a few years back.
No kidding! Seriously- was this elective or did he have a problem?
He strangely looks like Bob Barker with LaToya Jackson’s nose. They must have the same plastic surgeon.
Are schools closed tomorrow as well (Jan. 11?)
Yup for Decatur City, DeKalb County, Fulton, Cobb, and Gwinnett, and probably many more…
Did anyone else see the guy zooming down East Lake Drive in Oakhurst on a four wheeler bike while towing his friend behind him on a sled??!!
