On the Set of “The Lost Valentine”

Decatur Metro | September 28, 2010

A paparazzi sends in this image inside the Alston Campus Center at Agnes Scott College, which is hosting filming of Hallmark’s “The Lost Valentine” with Jennifer Love-Hewitt today.

Another eyewitness tells me that both Betty White and Jennifer Love Hewitt are on campus today, contrary to prior reports that only Ms. Love-Hewitt would be on campus.

DeKalb To Use Stimulus Bonds After All

Decatur Metro | September 28, 2010

The AJC reported just moments ago (the immediacy of the internet is so dramatic isn’t it?) that the DeKalb County Commission has voted to use $36 million in Federal Stimulus bonds (with subsidized interest), instead of pass them up, as was originally reported a couple weeks back.

According to an earlier AJC article the cash breakdown will be…

  • $29.5 million for water and sewer upgrades (A drop in the water-system bucket for sure.  You’ll still see a huge hike in your water rates in the coming years.)
  • $4 million to renovate the Recorders Court
  • $1.5 million for a new building to relocate the DeKalb Police Department from Dunwoody to “the Druid Hills area”.
  • $1 million to build a family protection center

The money suddenly became open to new possibilities when the GM plant redevelopment deal fell through.

Resident Reports Decatur Diner Might Finally Be Open

Decatur Metro | September 28, 2010

UPDATE: Looks like the answer is “NO”.

Gonna have to crowd-source this one.

Elliot writes in…

My wife just drove by the Decatur Diner and she said the “Coming Soon” signs are down and it looked like they were serving someone. IS IT TRUE?!?!?!?!?!

Can anyone confirm/deny?

A Primer For Listing Your Business with Google Places

Decatur Metro | September 28, 2010

Kristian writes in with a good overview of creating a Google Places page for local business owners.  Check it!

Google Places is a resource available to local businesses to help reach those searching for detailed information about them . This is available via a Google Search or via Google Maps. Ultimately, a user can pull up a Place Page, which has a collection of detailed information for that local business.

The Place Page for Leon’s Full Service is a perfect example.

A recent post on Google’s LatLong blog provides information about users editing data presented on Google Places as well as links for business owners to claim their businesses and update the information.

Google also announced last month that they intend to add a check-in feature to the Places API similar to foursquare, presumably used via Google Latitude.

It would be in any Decatur business owner’s interest to take advantage of Google Places, and I thought it might be something they should be aware of if they aren’t already.

Also note that activating Google Tags is [offering a 30-day free trial] for a limited time. [DM: According to Google, "Adding a tag to your Google Places listing allows you to highlight info that you want your customers to see."]
