Beyond “Blue Jean Bandits”
Decatur Metro | January 18, 2010When they broke into Boogaloos and pepper-sprayed an employee at Kalidescope, we were still referring to them as if they were cartoon villains on par with Yosemite Sam.
I’m happy to report (um…observe?) that not only do Atlanta Police finally seem to have the number of local gang members with a penchant for stealing blue jeans and flat-screens – 9 more were arrested yesterday after an early morning jean heist in downtown Atlanta – but because the APD and journos have pieced the story of the “30 Deep” gang together, we’re no longer hearing these organized criminals referred to as “blue jean bandits”.
Thank goodness.
From folks who seem to know, I hear that there’s been a bit of a coverup, or at least downplaying, of the fact that gangs are here in a big way in metro Atlanta.
Yes. MS-13 is here in a big way. On another note. Anyone here notice the significant rise in graffiti along Freedom Parkway?
But will they make a movie out of it? Or inspire a Law & Order Ripped from the Headlines episode?
On a more serious thought, though, between the various PD’s across the Piedmont region of our peachy state, which one experiences the greatest disconnect/discrepancy between having the investigative data and being able to do anything with it (waiting for arrest or search warrants to be signed, organizing enough manpower to find persons of interest)?
A few weeks ago, one of the History Channel’s “Gangland” Episodes was about gang activity in the Atlanta metro area. Obviously, the show wants to be as explosive as possible, but if even half of the stuff they presented is true, no one in their right mind would consider moving here.
One of the largest is Sureno 13 (aka Sur 13). Go to Wikipedia to learn more.
Also, here’s a link to a Sunday Paper article from last year that gives some more detail:

Shiver me paddles. I sit corrected. Your comment makes me want to get cable or direcTV again so badly.
