    Decatur Crime 2009 vs. 2008

    Decatur Metro | January 15, 2010

Cheers to the Decatur Police Department for putting out this informative chart, which not only compares the 2009 crime rate to previous years, but also the percentage of cases cleared, and a breakout of “crimes against persons” vs. “crimes against property”.

For all the talk surrounding crimes against property this past year (recap: “It was the economy!” “No it wasn’t!”), it’s interesting to see a decline in that column vs. 2008.  Not so good that crimes against persons increased, but nice to see that DPD increased it’s cleared rate in that category by 14 whole points!

I’m very pleased that none of these are from me.

And also that none of them are about me. :-)

“…none of them are about me.” Ahhhh, but we only have YOUR word for that, don’t we, Token?

I’m a little confused. 300% of 2008 homicides were cleared? Is that a typo, or is it a confusing spreadsheet way of saying three people were arrested for the same murder?

It’s gratifying to see robberies, burglaries and larceny dipping since they’re the crimes Joe and Josephine Average are most often victims of.

Or perhaps it means two 2007 homicides were cleared in 2008.

Yeah, I think it’s that at least two outstanding homicides from previous years were cleared up in 2008. I agree that is an odd way of showing that though.

You may recall that 2 of the 2007 homicides occurred right at the end of the year.

Maybe that 300% clearance rate was the result of something like this: http://tr.im/Kx4z

You’ve obviouslyt never seen The Wire. The chief is probably busting chops to get the clearance rate up so that he can get bumped to commissioner, even though he’s fallen out of favor with the mayor. Meanwhile there’s a scrappy bunch of Decatur cops assigned to downtown (the towers) just trying to connect all the dots and follow the money – straight to city hall.
