Vernon Jones Is Back!
Decatur Metro | January 15, 2010 | 12:43 pmIf you can’t be a Senator, might as well be a Representative!
The AJC’s Jim Galloway breaks the news that former DeKalb CEO Vernon Jones will soon be back on the campaign trail, announcing this afternoon at 2pm his intent to run against incumbent Hank Johnson (and other former Jonesians Connie Stokes and Lee May) for Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District House Seat.
Let the games begin!

Lord help us all.
I was wondering why Hank was gearing up so much for a lightly contested election.
Ain’t gonna happen, ’cause Vernon’s got more baggage than Hartsfield. Anyone with half a synapse firing could make enough hay to send his campaign down in flames. Here’s hoping!
I have two words in response to “ain’t gonna happen.”
Marion Berry
Mmmmm, I dunno. I’d like to think the people here are smarter than they were in DC. Plus, Lots of people still liked ol’ Marion, even after he got pinched for the drugs & briberies. Too many people (including many of the folks Vernon considers his core constituency) here got soured on Jones even before he left office.
So smart they elected Cynthia McKinney?
Good point– but when the demographics changed a bit, she didn’t have as much support. Further, she alienated a lot of supporters when she leveled spurious attacks on that Mitnik guy (his first name escapes me). McKinney got soundly trounced by Hank Johnson, and it wasn’t just because a lot of Repubs voted in the primaries. It was because she started letting too much of her crazy show in public, and people got a grip.
Vernon’s always been very in-your-face about who he really is, which resulted in his Senate run fizzling before it could really get off the ground, and will (crossing fingers) result in a defeat for the HOR as well. Unless he manages to pull off some miracle of rehabilitation and become someone genuinely likeable, with crossover appeal, he’ll make a lot of noise, but it won’t do him any good.
Sorry– that should have been “soundly trounced by Denise Majette” (Majette was defeated by Johnson). D’OH!
Don’t sell McKinney short. She was defeated by both Majette and Johnson. Johnson came into it after Majette had the bright idea of running for US Senate and McKinney wanted her old seat back.
Thomas Wheatley’s pic from the event communicates to us that Jones’ priority for the district is “Jobs First”.
A marked improvement over the less commonly heard “Jobs Last” rallying cry.
Heaven help us!
As indicated at his telling web site (http://vernonjonesforcongress.com/vernonjonesbiography.html), Vernon seems to have hired Palin’s PR people:
The son of a WWII veteran, Vernon Jones grew up in a devoted Christian family on a working farm in rural North Carolina. It was during his formative years that Jones established his rock-solid work ethic and traditional values.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaahm uhhhm.
I’ve seen Vernon Jones half a dozen times out and about in the past couple of years. Once he was wearing jogging clothes at Phipps. He is tall.
Vernon should go back to work for the phone company
DM: Am I in ‘moderation’ pergatory?
taxus! Where ya been?
Unfortunately I recall a couple comments in the past that make me more than a bit wary to ‘unmoderate’ you.
no no no no no, a thousand times no! can we please find some competent people to run for office?!!!!!!
How about the man behind the curtain…Decatur Metro himself? I’d vote for him in a heartbeat. I would even post a yard sign that says “Decatur Metro for Congress. Anyone who can moderate the citizens of Decatur can straighten ANYthing out!”
Too wordy, I know.
Oh man, I would social media the heck out of those big-wig politicos!
“What’s that Claire McCaskill? You just tweeted about how you talked healthcare reform on the Today Show this morning? Well, on my blog we just saved three owls, a badger, and paved a new bike lane with recycled SUV parts. And that was just this morning!”
