Decatur’s Farm-to-School Program Takes Off
Decatur Metro | November 6, 2009Michael Wall at Georgia Organics posted this video of CSD’s “nutrition staff” taking a cooking class on working with more local and organic products at Cook’s Warehouse in Decatur. [h/t:Decaturfm via Twitter]
This class is just one of many steps in the Farm to School program’s aggressive strategic plan to improve school nutrition in Decatur’s schools by incorporating more local, natural foods in school lunches. The full Strategic Plan and its many, many steps can be viewed as part of the School Board’s agenda for next week, when they will vote on its approval.
That is truly awesome. Especially if it means that my wife will let me send the kids out the door without packing them a lunch.
And I’m not sure, but this may have been how all of this got started:

I hope this works to improve the quality of food in our schools. My son is a DHS freshman. You don’t want to hear what he says about the aesthetic appeal of what they serve. And if I can get him to report what they serve, it is carbs, and more carbs.
My kids refuse to eat the school stuff too. And if you saw some of the stuff that they WILL eat… you’d know that they aren’t picky!
Go farm to school!
And Judd… she can be our spokesperson… here’s a longer video of the same thing…
I know I’m middle aged but I gain 5 pounds a month when I eat school lunches regularly. Apparently, the kids aren’t faring much better. Absurd! Yeah CSD for looking for a solution.
