I don’t mean to sound obtuse but this is a sad little joke, isn’t it? A satiric commentary on the closing of a stimulating, original gathering spot? I thought it was funny, in a grim and discouraging way.
at least they will have sandwiches and ice cream. I have so many people asking if there was a sandwich and ice cream place around here. isn’t there an ice cream place up by starbucks, or was there??
We biked to Jake’s all the time with the kids–it was one of our favorite routes and a great place to watch fireworks on July 4. So sad it closed! We are still waiting for Relics & Rarities to open, just hoping it will fill that need for a great little old-fashioned ice cream shop.
Jake’s is probably the best ice cream going…assuming you can find some. Even when you find a location (we recently patronized the one over off La Vista next to Taqueria El Vecino), he’s notoriously bad about keeping his franchisees supplied (case in point, the owner apologized for her small on-hand selection, lamenting “I’m still waiting for my shipment.”). Doesn’t help that Jake has created a lot of enemies by making promises he couldn’t keep to franchisees and other financial interests who tried to run him out of town a few years ago.
The best place to get ice cream in Decatur has long been Café Alsace; I’ve never understood why more people don’t patronize them. It’s good to have another option that may seem more comfortable for some than walking into a restaurant to get an ice cream cone, though I don’t expect Café Cliché to be homemade like Benedicte’s delicious flavors.
Watershed is one of the most over-rated restaurants in the city imho.
Nibblets or no nibbletts.
There’s nothing at Watershed that can touch the cafe’s spaetzle. Nothing.
Stopped by Cafe Cliche on Saturday and we had iced coffee and ice cream (Greenwood Ice Cream–local). It’s a cute little space, and the owners were really friendly. In addition to Button Cupcakes adn other baked, they sell hilarious greeting cards as well. I think they were getting many customers popping in from Little Azio’s looking for dessert. Seemed like the ice cream was quite popular!
j, the only place I know where one can currently get anything resembling ice cream is the frozen yogurt at Greene’s. The place by Starbuck’s was replaced by Little Shop of Stories.
There was an ice-cream place by Starbucks, but it closed, then there was a ice-cream place called Jakes, which closed – it was located in the now closed McDonough Street Market, right next to the now closed Wordsmiths Books location. Hmm, that’s all a bit depressing, sorry!
There is/was supposed to be a new ice-cream place called Relics & Rarities opening mid March at 409 N McDonough, but it didn’t open as planned, even though they did a lot of work on the building. Not sure what the story is on that!
Maybe you need to direct people to the freezer cabinet at Kroger for the time being!
Since Decatur Metro may be the blog of record for Decatur–we need a slight correction here. Vivid replaced Cold Stone Creamery. Little Shop took over a realty office–I think it was Adams.
There also used to be a good ice cream place in Candler Park, across from Fellinis, called Cold Cream – it, too, is gone. What it is with ice cream places?
My kids actually prefer the DQ (they like to see the counter folks shake their blizzards upside down, you know) but it would be nice to have some better ice cream close by.
I gave up on Jakes because they are so annoyingly meticulous about weighing their portions before giving it to you. How hard is it for a kid to learn how to scoop the proper amount? They have the smallest portions and highest price of any ice cream place I know of. And anyway, their ice cream is often freezer-burnt.
I will say, when we got it on Saturday, the scoops were very generous and no freezer burn whatsoever. But I’ve heard instances of both problems in the past, no doubt.
Their spaetzle is awesome, and I do crave it regularly, but honestly, it’s not rocket science making noodles, half a quart of cream, cheese, ham, and onions taste good.
And I’d set Watershed’s shrimp grits and pullman plank up against it any day of the week.
oh, I wish they were going to serve pizza!
Don’t we already have a Cafe Cliche on the square next to Little Shop of Stories?
I kid, I kid…
With a name that bad, I suspect those ex-Crescent Moon clowns are involved in this.

But damn, his ice cream is good.

D’acord on Cafe Alsace. One of the consistently best restaurants in Atlanta.
Puts Watershed to shame I think.
NECTAR (in Oakhurst) HAS GREAT ICE CREAM. RIDE or WALK on over and try it out! They got smoothies too!

Strange how a topic about one eatery can veer into completely unrelated and unnecessary comparisons to another.
Strange how a forum can be in place for folks discuss and post their opinions AND have them validated at the same time–I love learning new things.
Can you be a cliche if you created the cliche?

T’was indeed Adams.
Thanks, Daren, I stand corrected.

My feeling about that is the same as my feeling about YDFM – I will not patronize a poorly run business no matter how good the product.
Cold Cream was replaced by the funkier Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Room and they still serve the same ice cream.
I *love* Cafe Alsace, but to put them on par with or ABOVE Watershed is pretty silly. They serve canned corn niblets on their salads, for God’s sake.

Whoa, isn’t it sacrilege to diss Watershed round these here parts!

Not at all Flaka. This blog has a long history of dissing Watershed. See, e.g., http://www.decaturmetro.com/2008/10/12/watershed-turns-10/#comments
“This blog” or “commenters on this blog”?
It takes a lot for me to personally diss a restaurant.
Commenters, of course. Sorry to be confusing.
I wonder, considering the name, if I’ve been to this sort of café before.
