Recovering From the Storm
Decatur Metro | April 14, 2009There’s still a lot of clean up to do after yesterday’s wind nightmare.
Feel free to use this post to report updated power outages, road closings, etc.
My personal experience:
Ponce Heights still has no power and Altmod reports GA Power is saying it won’t be up until 8p Wednesday. Traffic was so bad this morning I turned around and took the train in. Wish I had just done that in the first place.
Be safe out there.
Latest from CSD says Oakhurst ES should have power by noon today, but Glennwood probably will not have power at all today. Both schools are in session (delayed start at 10 a.m.). The stop lights around Glennwood are still not working and It’s local-only traffic on Ponce in that area due to the trees that are down. All other CSD schools have power and are in session.
If it makes you feel any better, GA Power told us our power wouldn’t be back until Wednesday at 8, but it came back this morning at 2:40 a.m.
I don’t know, but I suspect Wednesday at 8 p.m. is when they expect all service to be restored.
Stopped and talked to one of the crews working the Ponce lines adjacent to Glennwood. They were putting transformers in place, and were in the process of restringing the wires–he said power would be restored this afternoon.
Meanwhile, the folks in the Glendale neighborhood will have to wait for the big tree on Glendale to be fixed. This crew guy said they would move over and take that on as soon as they were done on Ponce, and expected to have that finished by the end of the day also.
Power still out in the Parkwood neighborhood (where Ponce and Scott meet) and, when I left this morning, W Ponce was still blocked between Drexel and E Parkwood. We, too, were told Wed at 8 pm – I have my fingers crossed that we’re as lucky as Rusty and get it back before then.
Can anyone point me to a good Decatur map that is inclusive of all the neighborhood names? I know the usual suspects along with a few of the smaller neighborhood pockets, but know there are many I don’t know exactly (or at all). Such a map would be very helpful in deciphering all the storm reports!
We on the 100-200 blocks of Fayetteville Road had our grid back up by 8:30 pm. I had just settled in to a cozy evening of reading and resigned myself to the loss of a lovely pork loin, when So Co came through.
My dream of College Heights closure so I could work at home and hang out with the munchkin, alas, was shattered.
Does anyone know how the folks in MaK with the tree through the whole house are doing??
Nelliebelle1197 – they talked about the MaK house on the news this morning – said no one was injured and they were staying with family (I think) nearby. Heard the story before my second cup off coffee, so it might not be totally accurate. I think they said the house was condemned as well – but at least no one was hurt.
Power still out on Ponce Court as of 11 a.m. They chopped up and hauled off the fallen tree this morning, but the lines are still down so they still have the cul-de-sac cordoned off.
It was candlelight and Chick-Fil-A drive-thru with the dogs last night for us since we didn’t want to open the fridge/freezer and let the cold air out. I brought the most valuable seafood, meat, and cheese (still frozen/cold!) into work to stow in the break room fridge/freezer, since they’re giving us the 8 p.m. Wednesday ETA too.
Coventry (both sides of Scott) was still out this AM as I left for work at Emory. Buses for Renfroe were running & on time.
I have resigned myself to going home during lunch and dumping everything in the fridge…..
Wonder what the actual “trees lost” count is. In the hundreds?
UPDATE: Now Georgia Power is saying MIDNIGHT on the 15th for power restoration in Ponce Heights! Shout out to The Grange–they let me charge my iPhone at the bar during dinner last night!
Any updates? I live on Woodlawn…………
Just heard on WABE (radio) about 15 mins ago, Georgia power is saying that all power (throughout ATL) will be restored by midnight tonight.
Yeah, I’ve been reading that a lot of places…but on the local level it doesn’t sound like Ponce Heights/W. Ponce will see power before tomorrow night.
I mean, Bic went right to the guys doing the repairs and got an ETA. That’s the one I’d go with.
Maxwell St got power back sometime today. It was before 1pm. I saw a ton of GA Power trucks leaving our neighborhood when I was coming back home at 1. I assumed they were done but i guess not. It looked like Oakhurst Village had power again too.
The problem with the ETAs is that they seem to be part of a campaign. I don’t think the people in the field are allowed to say anything other that what has been already decided. Hearing Wednesday night or Wednesday midnight with regards to so many places just sounds like a campaign rather than an accurate estimate.
I’d be (pleasantly) astonished if Ponce Court got back up tonight, and am starting to feel like even Wed. night is an optimistic estimate. I think our outage is the result of multiple lines being down (the one on our street as well as some up on East Ponce). They may fix the one on the main drag, but I just have a feeling our little street will be low on the priority list.
It’s so frustrating! See the lights on behind us on Northern. See the Grange and Goats open …and we still have no power. I’m writing this at work, where at least I can see my computer. We don’t have a place to store our food, and it’s melting in the fridge. we can’t go to a restaurantw to spend money (cuz we have none right now) and so we sit and try to figure out why? Not a patient person, know the “grids” are different, but WHEN ARE WE GOING UNDERGROUND with fiberoptics? This happens all the time when the gerbils fall off that wheel and we lose power; old old system. This is the “smart growth” that we need, a full on plan to bury our lines. But nooooo, it’s not going to happen, is it? Cranky is cranky!!!
Ponce Heights has power!!!
I realize this is late in coming, but I found that the Kroger on Dekalb Industrial and North Decatur sells dry ice. It’s at the front of the store near the self-checkout lanes. I tossed a chunk in my fridge and one in my freezer and everything was fine even after 30 hours without power.
Bic was too pessimistic. North Parkwood’s power was restored tonight at about 9:30. wooo-hooo! Lights! Heat! Coffee in the morning!
I am SO grateful to the crew that fixed our lines yesterday- they had driven down from Virginia and went right to work cutting up the huge oak crossing Forrest Blvd. Had the power back on at 9:30. Thanks to all the crews that drove many hours to assist GA Power. My son and I made the best of the darkness and played many hours of games by candlelight. And this morning I was happy to find that my half and half had not gone sour!
Cranky, that gerbil has a grandfather that runs the air traffic control systems!
Flyers beware!
Seriously, it is interesting (criminal?) that our state legislators approved tax payers paying UPFRONT for nuclear power plants that MAY be built in the future. We could have used about half that money to put powerlines underground. Power probs. not related to down lines are few and far between, IMO.
VOTE CRANKY!
If you use dry ice, remember to ventilate the area. The carbon dioxide gas released displaces oxygen so you need to keep air movement around any container with dry ice in it. Always handle dry ice with thick gloves as well to avoid burns.
Its a great idea Macraolina, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.
I found the a list of neighborhood associations on the city of Decatur website. Go to:

hope this helps

Don’t give up. If you haven’t opened it since the power went out, everything’s still salvageable. I was fearing the worst, but most of my freezer stuff (even shrimp) was still frozen solid, and meat and cheese in the fridge was still cold.
At noon Tuesday, talked to the crew at Ponce and Drexel where the massive tree had snapped the telephone poll in half and all the wires are on the road. They indicated maybe by Wednesday night power would be restored, maybe.
The most recent list I saw last night had about 30 major locations with trees down in the City that affected streets, utilities or both. Smaller ones that didn’t affect those things or that were completely on private property were not on the list.
THERE it is!
I knew something had happened on Ponce but hadn’t heard details. Thanks Bic!
Hey, Lump. My daughter tells me Glennwood Elem. got theirs back around 2pm, so at least the main drag Ponce work has been completed. Maybe there’s room for optimism after all. Good luck!
First of all, fiber optics cannot carry power. Secondly, the underground thing comes up every time there’s an outage. Two things make it a very difficult solution; first, it’s very expensive and disruptive to retrofit existing high voltage lines underground (the feeder lines to your neighborhood are probably 14,000 volts), and second, when there is a problem, it much more difficult to isolate and fix.
Here’ something in today’s Sunday Paper about burying power lines:

Wife’s driving home as we speak, so we’ll know momentarily.
Still out, but there’s supposedly a crew working on our street, so hopefully we’ll be back up tonight.
You are a genius.
And I mean it! That’s seriously neat!
We got power back around 10:15 last night. You could hear the cheering up and down the street as the lights blinked on.
