    Recycle Your Christmas Tree

    Decatur Metro | December 28, 2008

Dennis over at Next Stop reminds us about Decatur’s convenient Christmas tree recycling program going on now thru January 3rd.

    Here’s the text off the city’s website…

Recycle your live Christmas tree in the annual “Bring One for the Chipper” event on Saturday, Jan.3. Drop off your tree at the Christmas Tree Recycling Center in the Agnes Scott parking lot. The entrance is between 184 and 206 S. Candler St.

The recycling center will be open Wednesday, Dec. 26, through Saturday, Jan 3.

Please do not leave trees anywhere else on the Agnes Scott campus.

Of course, that assumes your already motivated enough after a long, tiring holiday to strip your tree, which you swear you just put up, and haul it over to Agnes Scott.  :-)

My family has always subscribed to the “take it down when it’s brown” school of Christmas tree management. Usually, that’s late January (undecorating generally coincides with the latter rounds of the NFL playoffs).

This year, my Dad cheaped out and got his tree at Home Depot. The thing was brown and dropping needles before he even got the lights on it (but he still insists it was a good deal). We, on the other hand, got our tree at Winnona Park Elementary’s one-day tree sale. It’s still taking a ton of water, and may very well last until Valentine’s Day.

He needs help choosing his trees. we bought ours on dec 1st at Home Depot and its still has a soft trunk and drinking plenty of water. Best tree i’ve ever owned and not overpriced!

Same here — we got our tree at home depot in midtown. $50 for a 9-footer a few weeks ago. It’s holding up very well, and drinks water like a fish. I think it might actually still be growing — our angel is now touching the ceiling, and it didn’t used to. I’m going to recycle it by keeping it in a bucket of water outside and see if it can join us for another Christmas.

Probably depends on when the shipment was made to your Home Depot. I like the one-day sale because short of cutting it myself (which we may try next year), it’s the best way to know the trees were cut recently, and also to know where they come from (a farm in N.C.). And all the proceeds go to benefit a school in our community. Our 7-footer was $60. I believe a 9-footer there was $80.

Not as cheap as Home Depot, sure, but there are side benefits. And it’s still a much better deal than the tree lots that try to charge upwards of $120+ for anything over 9 feet.

I hope they put up better signs this year. Last year I drove around for a while and never found anything that looked like a recycling center, so I just tossed my tree in a pile where everyone else was tossing trees. It could have been the right place, but since this year’s announcement says “Please do not leave trees anywhere else on the Agnes Scott campus” in italics, then clearly people were leaving trees in the wrong place. Hint to the city/college: it’s because there weren’t any signs. Saying “between 184 and 206 S. Candler St” doesn’t really help – it’s hard to find house numbers on the other side of the street from the college without driving up and down the street more times than I have time for.

There have always been signs posted at the driveway that leads down to the parking lot where the trees are.

      You’re both right.

Yes Steve, there was a sign…but I also had to drive by it 3 times before I found it last year, so there is something to Vespolina’s comment.

Maybe we should send an email to David Yunger suggesting that the sign should be bigger…..

I just went by the drop-off site and there are two large signs, one for each direction, posted on poles about 5 feet long. Shouldn’t be too hard to find.

I just dropped off my tree. It was taken from my truck by the nice workers, so all I had to do was sit there. I also got a dogwood tree to plant in my yard. Awesome.

Drove down Sycamore this evening about 6PM and saw at least 2 trees set out by the curb to be picked up. Really surprising for Decatur.

Does anyone know if there are any tree recycling centers in operation any day other than Jan 3rd? I would like to recycle my tree but I am having a hard time finding a place that is still accepting trees for the week of Jan 5.
