El Tesoro Restaurant Website Up But Lacking Info
Decatur Metro | February 6, 2008Back in November, I reported that a Mexican restaurant called El Tesoro would be taking over the old Jake’s Ice Cream location at 129 Church Street. Well, since then I haven’t heard much and I can’t say I stroll down that part of Church all that often to check on progress.
But this morning I came across a link to the restaurant’s website! Excited, I clicked over to it expecting all kinds of info. Instead all I got was the graphic above. There are “menu” and “bar” links on the main page but they just lead to blank pages.
Update: In the comments section, Rus reports that El Tesoro currently plans to open on February 25th.
The website used to contain a menu, which is now gone. Makes me wonder if this place is actually going to open, especially with all the recent Decatur closings.
I met the owner today and he said they are planning on opening on the 25th of this month (hopeful fingers crossed). He’s a very nice guy and this restaurant has been his dream for over two years.
The reason the menu is gone from the website is that they have totally redone the menu and he is just now meeting with his web people to update the site.
Some good news for Decatur!
Great info as always Rus. Many thanks!
Don’t turn your back on any one of those characters involved with that restaurant.
Jim, I gotta say…not the most substantive post we’ve ever received.
I can’t tell if you’re joking or if you really have an unexplained gripe with the owners of this place. Either way I would appreciate some elaboration.
It opened. I ate there with my wife. Decor is very warm and more Spanish or South American than Mexican. Food is original and fresh. Tequila bar has a good assortment. We liked it a lot. I had the tres hongos tamal, a homemade tamale stuffed with mushrooms and spinich and wraped in corn husk. Mmmmmm delicious. One of the owners or manager, Alan, couldn’t have been more pleasant. Parking is in rear. There is outdoor dining on front and side decks. Check out the cozy fireplace and sitting area inside the front door to the left.
My husband and I have eaten at El Tesoro about four times already and everything we have ordered is delicious. It is also a beautiful restaurant.

ate at el tesoro twice now. cannot complain about the food and bar but that is as far as i will go. the service is terrible. the waits are terrible. the hostesses are non responsive. i have spoken with the owners and nothing changed. i will not go back to the restaurant ever again. i love the food, but cannot stand the fact that on a friday night they dont know how to staff appropriately. i hope they figure it out bc there are too many other great options in decatur for great food and service. i wonder if la casita (previous restaurant by same owners) didnt make it for the same reasons???
Wow kjenks, sorry you had a couple of bad experiences. I eat there about once a week and have always had impeccable service. Sometimes lunch, sometimes dinner, on various days, at the bar, outside and at indoor tables…
If you want to sample some REAL bad unfriendly unresponsive service try Taqueria Del Sol AND you’ll get bad overpriced food to boot!
Oh Rus…you just couldn’t help by step right in that hornet’s nest, could ya?
Though we can disagree about how bad/overpriced the food is at Taqueria (I for one am an addict), I can say I’ve never had a frisbee thrown repeatedly at my head while waiting for my food there.
Wow, I still love Taqueria. We go every nearly every Tuesday for “Taco Tuesdays.” I feel like they have food delivery down to a science. As soon as you sit, the food is there. I’ve always had tasty food there. But I only go when the line is short. Yes, they are mean to violators (people who try to sit before ordering)–you have to be willing to follow their system. But since their system works, it is ok with me. You can take the Memphis Taco and sub fried chicken for the pork–delicious. And surprisingly fresh and delicious sweet tea for the non-margarita set. I’ve been to El Tesoro as well and have had hit or miss service (mostly with the hostess) but it has never been bad enough to not want to return–good street corn on the appetizer menu! I am happy for the variety since Taqueria isn’t really classic Mexican.
El Tesoro – been there 4 times. Food always good. 3 times with quite good service. 1 time with bad service … so bad I could not get their attention despite repeated attempts to order another drink. Finally filled up my mouth with refried beans, mexican rice, and that verde salsa (and a dash of the chopotle salsa) … swooshed it around with some Bohemia, then simulated a messy mexican barf on the wood floor, with lots of noise to boot. That got their attention, and it felt good .. finally was able to order a margarita and get a refill of chips and salsa. Even with bad service, I’m glad to have the place here. The food is worth putting up with occasional service issues.
Taqueria del Sol. Been there hundreds of times. Food always good. Service always consistent and good. The best.
I’ll keep going to both.
