El Tesoro Closing – and then Reopening Under a New Name?

    Decatur Metro | January 23, 2011 | 7:40 pm

    DecaturMomof3 writes in…

We ate [at El Tesoro] earlier tonight and our waitress told us they had a very limited menu because it was actually their last night. She said they had new owners, but the same kitchen manager, and would be reopening in a month with a new name, but many of the same menu items. On our way out, we overheard another waitress telling her table they were out of a lot of things tonight since they were closing and would *maybe* be reopening in a few months.

    El Tesoro Too Kid-Friendly?

    Decatur Metro | May 7, 2008 | 4:27 pm

After receiving mostly glowing reviews on this and more reputable blogs early on, it sounds like some people have a gripe with el Tesoro: its gotten “too popular” with families.

Besha Rodell reports on comments Creative Loafing has been receiving from el Tesoro patrons who are frustrated with the profusion of kids (and their general hyperactivity) at the new restaurant.

Rodell hits the pavement, reviews the food (she loves the tamales), and reports that the “kid issue” wasn’t much of a problem for her.

I have yet to stop in for a bite, so I rely on your reports loyal readers. Are the kids an issue for you?

Creative Loafing Praises el Tesoro and Cakes & Ale

    Decatur Metro | April 11, 2008 | 10:27 am

CL’s Cliff Bostock can’t say enough good things about Decatur’s two newest eatries:  Cakes and Ale and el Tesoro.

I, for one, am beginning to feel a bit overwhelmed by good options of places to eat.  (I know, its a tragic life. Feel really sorry for me) But I’m glad to see there’s high-quality establishments filling the holes in our commercial landscape.

    Half-Price Decatur Eats

    Decatur Metro | March 29, 2008 | 4:19 pm

Rus points out that Creative Loafing’s “bites” program is currently selling $30 gift certificates to El Tesoro and the Depeaux for $15.

The new El Tesoro has gotten some good reviews on this site thus far from local residents. Opinions I hear/read of the Depeaux are often mixed, especially when its being compared to “true New Orleans” cuisine. And though I’ve never been to New Orleans (unfortunately), I think the friendly service, gator bites and Hurricanes at the Depeaux are often worth the fuss and the walk home (since one Hurricane usually has me seeing double).

Get these discounts while supplies last!

UPDATE: In my haste I overlooked Oakhurst’s Calavino’s, which is also included on the $30 for $15 list.  Thanks Carl!

El Tesoro Opens Wednesday, Featured in Daily Candy

    Decatur Metro | March 18, 2008 | 11:39 am

My wife yesterday, and Rus today, forwarded me this Daily Candy blurb about Decatur’s new Mexican restaurant, El Tesoro. In it we learn that the restaurant on Church Street opens tomorrow and that the owners come from Cantina La Casita in East Atlanta.

Recent searches for “buried treasure” have yielded 82¢, a missing left earring, and one mortifying Facebook tag. Still, onward you quest.

If you’re lucky, you’ll end up at El Tesoro (“treasure” in Spanish), the latest venture from the guys behind La Casita, opening Wednesday for lunch just off Decatur Square.

The menu includes Casita’s famous hand-rolled tamales and homemade everything else — ceviche del día, ducks carnitas, mint and garlic simmered pork meatballs, and even sour cream and salsas.

Hit them in the wee hours for a late-night menu of small plates of pickled chiles, goat cheese tamales, and a 95-deep tequila bar.

You’re in for an eyeful, too. Denise Disharoon decked the mantels, niches, and walls with altar pieces and Latin American folk art. Soon they’ll have piñatas — and, yes, they’ll be for sale. No, you can’t take them to the garden bar for a test run.

    Unless you’re looking for trouble.

El Tesoro Restaurant Website Up But Lacking Info

    Decatur Metro | February 6, 2008 | 12:10 pm

Back in November, I reported that a Mexican restaurant called El Tesoro would be taking over the old Jake’s Ice Cream location at 129 Church Street. Well, since then I haven’t heard much and I can’t say I stroll down that part of Church all that often to check on progress.

But this morning I came across a link to the restaurant’s website! Excited, I clicked over to it expecting all kinds of info. Instead all I got was the graphic above. There are “menu” and “bar” links on the main page but they just lead to blank pages.

Update: In the comments section, Rus reports that El Tesoro currently plans to open on February 25th.

New Mexican Restaurant to Replace Old Jake's Ice Cream Location

    Decatur Metro | November 5, 2007 | 12:04 pm

    img_0856.jpg

A new mexican restaurant called “El Tesoro” (like the tequila) has applied for a liquor license at the old Jake’s Ice Cream “house” down at 129 Church Street. Can’t really find a lot of info online about it. There’s an El Tesoro in Colorado Springs. Maybe they’re opening a Decatur branch!

More likely its just a new place.

If you have any additional info, share it below! If I hear anything new, I’ll make sure to update the post.
