Sunday Sales Pass in DeKalb with 72% of Vote

    Decatur Metro | March 7, 2012

The AJC’s Primary Results page shows that Sunday alcohol sales passed rather easily, with 72% of the vote supporting the measure.

Throw away your signs YDFM and other grocery stores!  It’s time for some Sunday sales.  Well, don’t throw them out just yet.  We need to determine when the Sunday Sales will go into effect.

In other local news, Atlanta residents decided to keep the 1-percent sewer tax, as opposed to pay higher water and sewer rates.

Avondale Expedites Sunday Sales, Beer Growler Open This Sunday

    Decatur Metro | November 16, 2011

Patch reported yesterday that instead of waiting for already scheduled meetings to go through the necessary three readings of the Sunday alcohol sales amendment in Avondale Estates, Mayor Ed Rieker has rushed the process in order for the city’s businesses to sell alcohol this coming Sunday, November 20th.

Lo and behold, the Beer Growler in Avondale just sent out an email this morning alerting followers that they will be pouring this coming Sunday.  The email claims they’ll be the first craft beer store in Georgia open on Sundays.

Decatur is expected to allow Sunday sales starting next Sunday, November 27th.  We’ll know for sure after this Monday’s city commission meeting, though it’s little more than a formality at this point.  I sure hope Growlie the Growler shows up to show his support!

1 in 5 Decatur Voters Voted on Sunday Sales and Ignored SPLOST

    Decatur Metro | November 11, 2011

    Marty writes in FFAF…

A total of 3762 City of Decatur voters turned out at the polls on Tuesday. That’s about 28% of active voters. This is a little higher than usual for a Decatur municipal election. But if you drill down the numbers a little it gets more interesting.

Of the voters who turned out, 3748 (99.6%) voted on the Sunday Sales referendum.

However, only 2931 of the 3762 (78% of voters) voted on the E-SPLOST question and only 3058 of the 3748 (81.5%) voted in the uncontested Commissioner At Large race (including write-ins).

Thus, we can estimate that about 700 Decatur voters (nearly 1 in 5 who showed up at the polls on Tuesday) showed up only to vote for the Sunday Sales referendum.

Will Decatur Post the Largest “Yes” Vote for Sunday Alcohol Sales?

    Decatur Metro | November 8, 2011

The question seems to be not “will Sunday alcohol sales pass?” but “by how much?”

Patch reported on its live blog that with 3 of 7 precincts reporting, Decatur was skewing 90%/10% in favor of Sunday Alcohol Sales.

So, will Decatur post the largest “Yes” number?  According to AJC.com, thus far many metro cities are posting around an 80% “yes” vote.   No one else is up at 90%.

With Passage, How Long Will We Wait for Sunday Alcohol Sales?

    Decatur Metro | November 7, 2011

Decatur City Manager Peggy Merriss tells DM that even if Decatur residents vote in favor of Sunday alcohol sales at the polls tomorrow, they’ll still have to wait a bit before they can go straight from Sunday brunch with the in-laws into the liquor store (or in Decatur’s case, the beer/wine store).

    Ms. Merriss states…

If the referendum passes, I anticipate recommending that the City Commission amend the existing ordinance to establish Sunday sell hours effective November 27, 2011.

Thanksgiving leftovers and a fresh growler.  Mmmmm….
