With Passage, How Long Will We Wait for Sunday Alcohol Sales?

Decatur Metro | November 7, 2011

Decatur City Manager Peggy Merriss tells DM that even if Decatur residents vote in favor of Sunday alcohol sales at the polls tomorrow, they’ll still have to wait a bit before they can go straight from Sunday brunch with the in-laws into the liquor store (or in Decatur’s case, the beer/wine store).

Ms. Merriss states…

If the referendum passes, I anticipate recommending that the City Commission amend the existing ordinance to establish Sunday sell hours effective November 27, 2011.

Thanksgiving leftovers and a fresh growler.  Mmmmm….

If so, I will be at Cook’s/Sherlocks to begin my holiday shopping season: bottles of wine for gifts; a growler and a six pack of Sierra Nevada Celebration for me!

Thats not too bad a wait – as I started reading the article my mind was putting the date farther off than that. Besides, it would be a good weekend kick it off.

Heh. I think I’ll be the only person voting against this.

      Al, why? just curious.

He’s clearly kidding. Right, Al? I mean, right?

      +1

Reading the AJC’s coverage of tomorrow’s vote, I saw yet another liquor store owner lamenting that the change would mean he would lose his day off. He’s voting against it.
    Now that’s just selfish.

Actually I know several places in areas where they are voting that will still choose to stay closed. Opening a store for a day has a lot of overhead, and until they see how many people have Sunday Beer Emergencies (AHH! Who hasn’t been there, though?) they won’t jump on board so quickly. It makes sense, from a bottom line standpoint.

Oh, I understand from a business perspective why a store might decide to remain closed. I totally get it. But using that as a rationale to vote against the measure is selfish and shortsighted.

          Yup.

Kinda like another item on the same ballot?

              Nice try.

Is voting against it to try to save your day off any more selfish than voting for it so you can buy your growler on Sunday? I voted “yes,” but not out of any feeling of magnanimity.

For me, I don’t care if I never buy alcohol on Sunday, its about freedom.

          what he said.

I’ve always like the Solomonic way New York State handled it. They told the package stores, “You can be open six days a week. Which six days is up to you.”

Janelle, there really isn’t much overhead in being open an additional day as a B&M business. Look at it like this: Your landlord charges you ___ per month, not ___ per day that you’re open. Utility costs are negligible. The only thing you have to think about is payroll but I really couldn’t see that being a problem. I have my own store and we’re open 7 days a week for precisely these reasons.

When I left my polling place today, people were actually cheering and giving high fives that they had the option to vote for Sunday sales. Unfortunately, there was not as much enthusiasm for the SPLOST vote or school board candidates….
