Porchfest Video! – Sage Hill String Band Performs “Hallelujah”
Decatur Metro | October 21, 2015 | 11:00 amIn case you didn’t get to see the Sage Hill String Band on Sterling Street at Sunday’s Oakhurst Porchfest, here’s their lovely rendition of “Hallelujah” by the great Leonard Cohen, which was recently posted to YouTube.
This is really nice and a good example of why a reasonable amount of amplification is necessary for these kinds of performances. Well Done!
this is just so wonderful: a great example of the wondrous music to be found all around those Oakhurst porches. thanks for posting!
Starting right about 2:40 there’s the faint sound of a baby melting down, contributing to the violin solo in a kind of atonal Brian Eno sort of way.
Possibly my granddaughter. She was clapping a sweet beat and trying to sing along.
Very Nice. Leonard Cohen. The name reminds me of the time in the Seventies when I was a big fan. I remember finding a Cohen album at the Turtles music store on Peachtree that showed a drawing of two medieval (and nude) angelic creatures embracing in the sky over a town. The Turtles price tag was placed in such a way to limit the view but boy, when I got that album home, I realized that the medieval period wasn’t all that dull!
But back to shouting hallelujah. With all the fun things to do in Decatur you might forget to check out some local institutions that encourage hallelujah year round. Please consider visiting and joining a local Decatur church or synogogue and experience the real thing.
Sage HIll String Band was wonderful, and yes, they came prepared with perfect sound. Being on the porch steps rather than recessed under the roof surely is a help too.
We did get to see this performance. They were really amazing.
Sweet!
It’s so cool to be on one of my favorite blogs and see my house! Steve, Anna and Matt (Sage Hill) were so cool and it made for a great hour of entertainment. I agree with Keith F that amplification is necessary. It’s very hard to entertain 40-60 people with a single acoustic guitar (our neighbors had that and I feel like only ten or so people were really able to enjoy it.
Please support Sage Hill. You can often find them at Napoleon’s in Oak Grove. Sometimes they use Sage Hill String Band and have additional musicians.
The band mentioned twice during their set that they loved the audience and it’s so much better than playing in a bar or restaurant where they don’t have quite as much control over their set list. In fact, during the introduction of this song, they said that it’s been banned (as a downer) in almost every place they’ve played.
Porchfest is the coolest neighborhood event I’ve ever been a part of. Is it too early to sign up to host next year?
