Half-Price Decatur Eats
Decatur Metro | March 29, 2008 | 4:19 pmRus points out that Creative Loafing’s “bites” program is currently selling $30 gift certificates to El Tesoro and the Depeaux for $15.
The new El Tesoro has gotten some good reviews on this site thus far from local residents. Opinions I hear/read of the Depeaux are often mixed, especially when its being compared to “true New Orleans” cuisine. And though I’ve never been to New Orleans (unfortunately), I think the friendly service, gator bites and Hurricanes at the Depeaux are often worth the fuss and the walk home (since one Hurricane usually has me seeing double).

UPDATE: In my haste I overlooked Oakhurst’s Calavino’s, which is also included on the $30 for $15 list. Thanks Carl!
Ditto the earlier reviews of El Tesoro. I was pleasantly surprised at how good my suite of appetizers were. The plantains were awesome. Empanadas and tamales both very good. The ceviche had a sort of Asian taste to it, but not bad at all. I hope it stays around for a while.
Don’t forget that Calavino’s is included in Bites!
This was a wonderful tip! We bought 6 (including Calavino’s). Who subsidizes this gift certificate program? Thanks again!
It’s essentially a type of display advertising program where the restaurant gets newspaper ad space in exchange for the certificates. Instead of paying, say, $2,000 for a certain number of weeks of ads, they give CL $4k worth of GCs (well, minus various fees and deductions) to sell. It’s a helpful way for establishments to reach new customers without having to spend a lot of cash up front.
