Stunning Echo Villa: A Sculptural Home Inspired by Taiwan’s Majestic Mountains

Echo Villa, a luxurious private estate in Taipei, Taiwan, masterfully integrates architecture with the natural environment. Covering an area of 10,650 square feet (990 square meters), this vast property was recently redesigned by Peny Hsieh Interiors. The villa is cleverly situated against the mountainside, designed to complement rather than overpower the natural landscape, with strategic views that capture the breathtaking scenery which influenced its design.

Upon entering, the architectural philosophy of the home is immediately apparent: all elements are designed to bend, curve, and flow in harmony with the external environment. The design eschews sharp corners and strict divisions in favor of fluid lines that sweep across ceilings, cascade down walls, and extend into bespoke furniture pieces. These flowing forms mimic the rolling hills nearby, creating a continuous visual dialogue between the house and its surroundings.

The essence of Echo Villa’s design is its carefully chosen material palette that enhances its connection to the natural world. Walls coated in mineral-toned plaster add a tactile depth reminiscent of geological formations, while the natural teak floors provide warmth and a subtle organic feel to the space. The inclusion of curved, built-in structures along with handcrafted furnishings, textured fabrics, and bespoke concrete treatments fosters an environment that is both tactile and serene.

The home’s color scheme is deliberately restrained, with a focus on soft neutrals and colors inspired by the earth, amplifying the peacefulness of the setting. Every aspect of the design, from surface finishes to decorative details, is thoughtfully considered to let the raw materials and architectural forms shine. Glass, metal, and fabric elements are introduced in a subtle manner, creating a balance between the robust, grounding features and those that are lighter and reflective.

Lighting is pivotal in defining the spatial experience within the villa. Natural light is artfully diffused through the home’s unique architectural elements, evolving with the movement of the sun across the sky. At night, soft indirect lighting highlights the home’s fluid architectural features and recesses, enhancing the textural details and contributing to a gentle luminescence throughout the space.

The grand foyer is particularly striking, with a ceiling that soars nearly 30 feet above and is adorned with a custom-made glass lighting installation that seems to hover in the air, its organic shapes reminiscent of the misty mountain air.

Further enriching the home’s aesthetic, Echo Villa boasts a remarkable collection of modern art and furniture that underscores its foundational concept. Works by Draga & Aurel, Bruno Moinard, Christophe Delcourt, and Paul Bik are strategically placed within the home, their artistic presence merging seamlessly with the living environment and enhancing the overall experience for the residents.

In the master bathroom, the design continues with curved walls that enclose the space, centering around a striking black stone bathtub that serves as the room’s focal point.
