D'Ora Tokai Transforms Dubai Villa Through Sculptural Minimalism

A Fresh Architectural Vision at “The Edge of Calm”

In the prestigious Dubai Hills Estate, the “The Edge of Calm” villa presented a unique opportunity for interior designer D’Ora Tokai to completely deconstruct and reconstruct a home with an innovative architectural focus. Having previously designed for the same family twice, Tokai was granted an exceptional level of creative control in this residential project.

The redesign of the villa incorporated three major structural additions that significantly changed the relationship between the home’s interior spaces and natural light. A former courtyard was transformed into an enclosed kitchen, seamlessly integrating it with the living areas. The backyard was partially converted into a larger space combining the living and dining areas. On the upper floor, the main suite was enlarged to include twin walk-in closets finished with bespoke microcement.

Material Choices That Speak Volumes

Tokai chose a material palette that subtly opposes Dubai’s usual preference for glossy luxury. Throughout the 2,700 square foot interior, oak herringbone flooring provides a solid, rhythmic foundation. Calacatta Vagli marble was used not for grand expanses but as a structural highlight in the details of joinery, surface accents, and custom-made furniture, its grey veining adding a dynamic touch to the space. This was complemented by brushed stainless steel and silver oak cabinetry, offering a soft contrast within the space.

Perhaps the most striking material used was the warm-tinted glass for table tops, sliding pocket doors, and cabinetry, which introduced subtle variations in tone and translucency, enhancing spatial dynamics without the use of bold colors or patterns. The use of colors was minimal yet intentional, with tones of eggplant and blush in the master bedroom and gentle pinks in the daughter’s bedroom.

A Statement Piece Rooted in Craftsmanship

The interior’s standout feature is a bespoke eight-meter-long rug, handwoven in India specifically for this project. In an area where rugs typically serve merely decorative purposes, this rug set a foundational tone for the living room with its neutral shades of beige, brown, and soft yellow, providing warmth without dominating the decor. Choosing Indian craftsmen for the rug subtly contests the usual correlation between high-end residential design and local craft traditions, introducing a thoughtful dialogue about global artisanal work within a luxurious context.

This meticulous attention to detail and materiality not only redefines the villa’s aesthetic but also its functionality, creating a serene yet sophisticated living environment that reflects both the designer’s vision and the inhabitants’ lifestyle.
