Stunning Almaty Apartment: A Masterpiece of Sage, Sunlight & Serendipity

Some might call it fate, a sixth sense, or just pure luck, but the narrative truly shaped a home as influenced by its emotional essence as its physical layout.

This dwelling is home to a vibrant family of five, whose lives revolve around music, art, theater, travel, and each other. Mamedov found their energy captivating from the start. Their discussions were free-flowing, their connection immediate, and their tastes remarkably similar to his own, fueling the project with a silent, emotional drive.

Mamedov has a unique approach to color, treating it almost like a musical element. He naturally associates people with specific colors, which then form visual and auditory compositions in his mind. For this family, he envisioned a sophisticated shade of sage, or light olive, representing calmness, elegance, and subtlety, yet with complex undertones. This color set the emotional tone throughout their home, recurring like a thematic melody.

Building on this foundational hue, Mamedov composed a palette of more vibrant colors: red for boldness and energy, blue for depth and serenity, and a cheerful yellow to inspire joy and creativity in the children’s areas. In the master bedroom, soft pastels and deep burgundy create a more subdued mix, evoking feelings of tenderness, unity, and closeness. Colors extend beyond typical boundaries, adorning walls, doors, baseboards, wallpaper, and even ceilings, achieving a balance between restraint and expressiveness, without veering into the overly dramatic.

The color scheme also addresses a significant architectural challenge of the apartment. Located in seismically active Almaty, the structure features numerous columns and beams. Mamedov turned these potential obstacles into a rhythmic design element. In the living area, mirrored columns visually segment the open space, while a ceiling cornice in an accent color frames the beams, bringing unity to the space. Thus, what might have disrupted the flow of the apartment instead enhances its rhythm.

The apartment’s layout adheres to a logical design. Initially an open space with structural columns and a narrow entrance corridor, it was reconfigured into distinct public and private zones. The kitchen, living, and dining areas now serve as a communal hub for activities like cooking, reading, and entertainment. Beyond double glass doors lies a private sanctuary of bedrooms, separated by a symbolic threshold.

Paris served as a subtle yet influential reference, not through overt themes but as an ethos embodying soft light, sophistication, intelligence, rhythmic flow, and a harmonious blend of the new and old. Mamedov infused this Parisian mood with Italian warmth, adding layers of sunshine, sensuality, and emotional depth, yet maintaining a connection to its Kazakh roots.

The home is grounded in materials like French herringbone parquet, natural textiles, ceramic tiles, rattan, raffia, wool, cotton, silk, wood, and metal, creating a rich, tactile environment. The decor comprises items collected from various origins, each piece integrated seamlessly without cluttering the space, reflecting the family’s travels, memories, and intuitive selections.

A custom rug from India, based on Mamedov’s designs, is placed among items from renowned designers and brands such as Saba Italia, Gubi, Louis Poulsen, and others. Local artisans also contribute to the home’s unique character through bespoke cabinetry, benches, and other custom pieces.

Rather than presenting as a static showcase, the apartment is an evolving canvas, its beauty lying in how it accommodates ongoing life, allowing for the introduction of new art, routines, conversations, and memories.
