Studio Papaya’s SBC Apartment: Smart Design Maximizes Small Spaces!

Despite its compact 538-square-foot layout, the SBC Apartment in São Paulo, Brazil, is a masterclass in maximizing space through ingenious design. Studio Papaya curated the apartment like a living organism, using a blend of colors, materials, and tailor-made furnishings to illustrate the apartment’s functionality from dawn till dusk.

The entrance immediately establishes a welcoming atmosphere. A deep green color engulfs the entryway, extending from the floor to the walls and ceiling, creating a sense of being drawn into the space rather than merely entering it. A meticulously crafted wooden screen cleverly conceals storage while allowing light and air to circulate freely. A built-in low seat and compartments offer a spot to unwind, drop personal items, or select a record, enhancing the ritual of returning home. The integration of the former balcony into the main living area creates a seamless, expansive space.

A versatile piece of furniture anchors the living space, serving multiple purposes. A bespoke table is designed to slide and extend, transforming from a kitchen prep area to a dining table or a workspace as needed. The kitchen setup resembles an artist’s studio with its minimalist pale cabinet fronts and exposed plywood edges, while stainless steel counters add a reflective quality that sharpens the visual appeal. Flooring transitions delineate different zones for cooking, relaxing, and moving through the apartment, guiding the eye smoothly without the need for physical barriers.

The apartment’s adaptability is largely due to custom carpentry. On the lower level, an array of shelving, screens, and storage solutions fit together seamlessly, accommodating everything from social gatherings to leisurely lounging. The seating is flexible, with components that can be rearranged to serve as tables or ottomans. A large window bathes the interior in natural light and offers lush views, merging the boundary between indoors and outdoors. The use of artificial lighting is minimal, employed subtly as natural light wanes.

Above, the mezzanine overlooks the living area, subtly enclosed by a slender railing with green accents. The decor shifts to warmer earth tones and honey-hued wooden flooring, creating a cozy environment for watching movies or reading. A louvered partition allows light and sightlines to pass through, ensuring privacy without compromising on light. Strategic placement of shelving and mirrors along the mezzanine enhances the sense of space, preventing the corridor from feeling cramped.

The tranquility extends into the bedroom, where custom-built furniture lifts off the floor to create a more spacious and uncluttered environment. The bed features a simple wooden headboard with integrated lighting and power outlets, while a cleverly designed wardrobe occupies the vertical space next to the room, appearing to float within the double-height area. Soft draperies soften the incoming light, giving the bedroom a serene, enclosed feel.
