Caution: Spoilers ahead for Season 3, Episode 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
This week on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Spock experienced a deep emotional setback — assuming Vulcan emotions can indeed be shattered. However, another member of the Enterprise crew might just be the one to heal his broken heart.
In the second episode of Season 3, which premiered on Paramount+ on Thursday, Spock was eagerly anticipating Chapel’s return following her fellowship. To his surprise, she returned not alone but with her charming new beau, Dr. Roger Korby, portrayed by Cillian O’Sullivan. Spock found it difficult to accept her new relationship — it defied logic! However, when a mischievous alien conjured an alternate reality where he and Chapel were on the verge of marriage, Spock ultimately chose to do the honorable thing by helping Chapel reunite with Korby.

The Future for Spock and Chapel
With the romantic chapter between Spock and Chapel closed, what lies ahead for them as colleagues aboard the ship? “They will definitely need to interact,” executive producer Henry Alonso Myers shared with TVLine. He assured, “This interaction will inevitably be charged with drama… We can guarantee that the dynamic, both dramatic and comedic, between them will persist. Just because their romance ended doesn’t mean there aren’t more intriguing developments to their relationship waiting just around the corner.”
Spock and Chapel share “a very complex relationship that often goes undiscussed,” according to Myers, which adds to the challenges they face. Fellow executive producer Akiva Goldsman remarked, “We really adore these characters [Spock and Chapel], and they’re definitely going through some tough times.”
Potential New Romance for Spock?
However, easing things might be Spock’s budding romantic potential with security officer La’an, as seen in their interactions in Episode 2. Did anyone else sense the chemistry during those dance lessons? Myers described Spock and La’an’s connection as “more casual and mature. They approach it like adults who recognize what the other has to offer. Initially, they are friends,” he noted. Yet, there’s a hint that their relationship might evolve beyond just friendship.
Do you support the idea of Spock and La’an as a couple, or are you holding out hope for Spock and Chapel to rekindle their romance? Drop into the comments and let us know your thoughts.
